    OG = 1.110! Double-check me, please.

This is my second brew. My OG was calc'd to be 1.109, so it's close enough, I guess. BUT, please help me here: I knew I'd need a lot of yeast, so I pitched it on the cake of the previous hi-gravity batch (5-gallons), which was OG 1.095, AND added in the cake from a 1-gallon batch of an OG...

Scared to turn it up...to 40 PSI

Here's my kit. I got kegs using the options at the bottom of it all. http://www.kegconnection.com/2-faucet-fridge-homebrew-kegerator-kit/ I don't see a secondary regulator.

Scared to turn it up...to 40 PSI

OK, 30 PSI sounds good. (You're right ... I mistyped it.) Do I turn off all the valves when I'm done for the night on the kegs?

Scared to turn it up...to 40 PSI

OK, I'm new. I have a Carbacap with a regulator, tank, etc. Anyway, everything appears to be in good shape. The 2L bottle looks great, the system is new, and I've got it turned up to 20PSI. I'm just scared to turn it up to full strength. The bottle is rock hard. Somebody reassure me that...

My calibrated refractometer only shows white!

Whew! Both batches need blow off tubes this morning!

My calibrated refractometer only shows white!

OK, I used the hydrometer and my OG is a 1.095! :D And I'm sending the refractometer back. I accidentally ordered a low-sugar one that goes up to 20 brix. So that's the cause of the weirdness; it was all my fault. Thanks to all of you who dropped by to help! -Johntodd

My calibrated refractometer only shows white!

I don't understand. This is a wort, so no alky yet? BTW, this is my first refractometer. I used a hydro during my winemaking years.

My calibrated refractometer only shows white!

I whisked the Dickens out of that stuff and checked for clumps. I'm an amateur chef, so that kind of stuff I know to keep a lookout for. So maybe just wait and check it tomorrow? Perhaps some settling will occur?

My calibrated refractometer only shows white!

I'll have to grow scrape the barnacles off the hydrometer. LOL! 1.090 is what the recipe says.

My calibrated refractometer only shows white!

Boiled for 45, no late additions. Hops at 45, 20, and 2. Everything seemed to go well. My very first brew! Had a minor boilover, does that throw anything off?

My calibrated refractometer only shows white!

Yes, tested the meter again with RO and we're good. I tested it with a glass of tea last week, and it worked good. (Although I have no idea what the SG of the tea should have been.) I weighed the ingreds. with a scale that works, so I'm pretty sure I got the right amounts. Well, opinions? I...

My calibrated refractometer only shows white!

Did I just brew an insanely high gravity wort? My refractometer was calibrated with RO. But when measuring the cooled wort, all I see is white and no blue. Somebody please he'p me. Recipe: 7.5# Dry Malt Extract - Dark - US 2.5# Corn Sugar (Dextrose) - US and hops into 5 gallons total in...

Dumbest Newbie Brewing Mistakes You've Made

I can truthfully say that I've never made a newbie mistake!* *(I must also confess that I've never brewed beer. My first batch will probably be next weekend.)

    What single variety to grow?

OK, I went with Cascade from a different supplier. Thanks everyone for your input! -Johntodd

Games you like to play when drinking (not drinking games!)

I've often wondered about that game. Why a pickle? Why not hide something more durable like a length of pipe or a beer bottle or something? And what if no one ever found the pickle? It would rot and stink up the place! You'd never have that problem with a length of pipe or a beer bottle.

    What single variety to grow?

@BigMack Thanks! Looks like I'm leaning towards Cascade. Williamette can't take the heat we have here.

    What single variety to grow?

I have extensive gardening experience, so that is not part of the problem. The problem is which one variety to grow? I want a general purpose hops for all beers. I will be brewing ales in the summer and lagers in the winter. We are very tolerant of recipes deviating away from "authentic"...

Games you like to play when drinking (not drinking games!)

This is all about games to play while drinking your fave home brew. It's not about "drinking games", where one purposefully loses in order to get mo' beer. :) My favorite game to play when drinking is "Banished", by Shining Rock Software. It's a great long-player, low-stress game...

    Brewing a month

Are these flavored teas all-natural? I've only brewed plain tea. If the flavored teas have artificial chems in them, you may be creating a toxic monster in there. IDK.
