The New Revolution in brewing … courtesy of Johntodd

A little. I always swirl it to get it out. Always gets dumped through a sanitized strainer into the fermenter. The inside of my electric PC is non-stick, so cleanup is a snap.

They should pay me money for how many people I've turned on to the electric PC!

I've only done specialty grains once. I wouldn't put them in the PC because I fear over-extraction of tannins. A hot soak on the stove is still what I would do.

As an update to this thread, my cold brews have all been smashingly good. Ageing still smooths out the edges, like in all beers, and I get the benefits of not boiling anything. Makes the same beer, from what I've drank. Thanks! -Johntodd

    2016 Hop Growing Thread

I know I'm not recognized here, but please let me chime in on general gardening. Healthy plants are very resistant to, and even repulsive to, pests of all kinds. Tons of bag ferts won't get you there. You must have high quality, very rich soil that runs very deep. So, for new plantings, this...

    2016 Hop Growing Thread

I'm sure this question has been asked and I've missed it: You folks growing your hops way up into the sky, how do you harvest? Ladder? Rope/pulley to lower the bines back down? Cut the ropes and re-string every spring? Thanks! -Johntodd

    Sparging on the Grainfather

The main reason I want the Grainfather is because of it's temperature control. I want to get away from heating water on the stove with a thermometer; it's a pain. Could I just sparge with my 120* tap water?

    Sparging on the Grainfather

Can I ask a total-newb question? I'm asking in this thread because my question is about sparging on the Grainfather. I want one of these and that's the only way I'll ever do all-grain brewing, and the sparge is my one last thing to worry about. When sparging, why can't you just hook up the...

DME Mart is out of business! HELP!

Now that DMEMart.com has shut down, where can I buy DME at reasonable prices? I rather enjoyed their stuff. Thanks! -Johntodd

    Weird hangover from Doppelbock

OK. I'm just going to have to ferment lower and longer and then actually lager it. My head was better this Sunday as opposed to last Sunday, so maybe it's not just fusels, maybe some conjenors are dropping out. *sigh* Good beer takes time. Wish Doctor Who would bring me some beer from last...

    Weird hangover from Doppelbock

Ferm temps were in the upper 60's, lower 70s. Best I could do. I went ahead yesterday and fined it with gelatin. Maybe that will strip something out while still leaving some character. Hate to do that, but I can't stand the thought of my favorite brew hurting me. LOL!

    Weird hangover from Doppelbock

My homebrewed Doppelbock gives me a weird hangover, regardless of how much/little I drink. It leaves me foggy headed all the next day until late afternoon. Dehydration isn't the issue. I was in the Navy; I know all about rehydrating myself. It's an extract brew. Wonderful taste, aroma...

    Low-alcohol Doppelbock?

Here's my recipe: http://brewgr.com/recipe/10961/ez-winter-een-mas-in-july-doppelbock-doppelbock-recipe I know it's not much by most people's standards, but it works for me. I think my particular brand of DME (from DMEMart.com) is what makes it works because their dark DME has a blend of...

    Low-alcohol Doppelbock?

Anybody ever use grocery store extracts in flavoring beer? I wouldn't be above adding a caramel extract and some cocoa powder. If we can't ferment it into the proper flavors, then let's simulate it through other means.

    Low-alcohol Doppelbock?

Would there be any sense to brewing/fermenting as per the recipe, and the heating the finished beer in an open kettle to drive off some alcohol? I read a thread about that somewhere around here. There would be no boil, since alcohol vapes out a lot cooler than water.

    Low-alcohol Doppelbock?

I want the flavor and mouthfeel of a doppelbock with the alcohol of a session beer. This may be impossible.

    Low-alcohol Doppelbock?

Ahhh ... All-Grain. Capital letters FTW! Someday I'll have a Grainfather ... or whatever is available in the year 2020. ;) Perhaps some oats? Get the thickness and be unfermentable? I don't care if it's true to style, as long as it's exactly the same. LOL! Thanks! -Johntodd

    Low-alcohol Doppelbock?

Hi! I love my homebrewed doppelbock; it's the best beer I've ever had! But it has a lot of alcohol, so I can only drink about 2 pints over the course of an entire evening. That gets me completely inebriated. So, I'd like a lower-alcohol doppelbock. Same sweet malty goodness, same...
