Cleaning Carboy with 75% Less Water

I have had trouble with the 'drilled stopper' that is a solid cork with a hole through it. I have these formed rubber stoppers that are 'hollow' (instead of solid) but still provide a seal, and a hole for airlock or racking cane. When the solid ones are at all wet, they pop themselves out...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Mini-mashing (my 2nd try) Edwort's Haus Pale right now!

    Hydrometer question

re: Taterbug I believe drug tests use more sophisticated techniques to actually measure and identify drugs (various forms of spectroscopy and such). They test temperature and specific gravity of the sample to help confirm that it is in fact fresh, unaltered and undiluted urine. If these...

    Hydrometer question

Wouldn't your result be dependent on the accuracy of a volume measurement? I would imagine measuring 5 gallons accurately enough to mimic a hydrometer would be tough/not worth it. With just original/final weights of the whole brew (no volume) you could probably figure out how much was actually...

Cleaning Carboy with 75% Less Water

I've finally worked out a way to soak tough carboy stains in Oxyclean without the need to fill it full! I took a stopper with a hole and put a racking cane through it to go into the carboy, trimming the end so it has at least a few inches from the bottom. Put a gallon or two of water/oxy into...

Yeast Harvest and Bottling Marathon FAIL / (and recovery)

I had 2 beers ready to bottle and thought I could bang them both out last night. I was also going to try washing and harvesting the yeast (for the first time) from a Red Ale. The other (Red IIPA) had been dry hopping for almost 2 weeks so it NEEDED to come out now, and the yeast wouldn't be...

Fermenting Beer Causes Dairy Products to Spoil?

SWMBO just asked me to look into this, claiming all of our cheeses have prematurely spoiled and newly opened milk curdled in 2 hours. Nothing coming up in Google/HBT-search. Is this possible? We have 2 carboys with a Brown/done and IIPA/dryhopping in the kitchen right next to the fridge...

Extract IPA Taste Like 'Funky Honey' - No Trace of Hops

I did not measure my OG (since I'd been doing only extract-kits + top-off prior with inaccurate readings) My FG is as stated in the notes, 1.017, the recipe stats are for reference. 16 lbs? That is 2x what I've used in any recipe so far (though some had 6 lbs LME + 1 DME), all of which...

Extract IPA Taste Like 'Funky Honey' - No Trace of Hops

Thank you! SWMBO often gets ingredients while I'm at work, and they didn't have the Summit and had her sub Amarillo. We are still learning, so blindly followed. It didn't occur to me to check the stats for further adjustment! SWMBO elaborated on the 'bee pollen' flavor as likely being a 'wet...

Extract IPA Taste Like 'Funky Honey' - No Trace of Hops

4th beer batch (2nd IPA), my Recipe and Notes: Had one half-filled 22oz bottle with the leftover from bottling, let it carb for a week and a half then tossed it in the fridge to avoid a bomb. I tried it the other day after a week in the fridge, it wasn't very carbed (as expected), but...

Do All Grains Need to be Cracked?

Thanks all for the guidance, I had a hard time finding any of this with Google. I figured they probably needed to be cracked, I figured not being able to do so probably was limiting my use of them, and that is probably for the better as my first mini-mash was an experiment in temperature...

Do All Grains Need to be Cracked?

Last Saturday I made the American 'Home Run' Red Ale which unplanned, was my first mini-mash, among other impromptu experiments (half dark DME, no hop bags). My girlfriend picked-up the ingredients while I was at work, so I didn't realize until I was warming water that I had grains that might...

    Timer for iPad

Try searching for workout targeted apps. A guy I work with has one for his iPhone that we use for work with consecutive timed sessions that sound an alarm and automatically continue counting into the next session. Aaron

Practices and Ideas for Conservative Water Use

Many things I do to save water have been mentioned: - Hot IC discharge water goes into 5-gal bucket for label-stripping bottles - This water can be reused many-many times as long as more Oxy is added - My used bottles get quick rinse immediately after pouring and drip-dry - Sanitizer is made is...

What Should I Brew My Dad, Who Doesn't Like "Ales"

Thanks all for the feedback! Never heard of braggot, but it certainly sounds interesting. My Dad is by no means BMC... More like "Sam Adams, Heiniken, Blue Moon". I'm pretty sure he'd love a Chocolate Stout, and I plan on having one aged by then anyway. I've heard of this Cream Ale around a...

What Should I Brew My Dad, Who Doesn't Like "Ales"

First, I cannot and will not Lager. My family will be visiting from the East Coast in the Fall for the first time since I've started brewing (and moved from OR to CA). My Dad doesn't like a lot of my favorites (Ninkasi, DFH, Rogue, IPAs, dark/heavy ales), but does drink mass-micro-craft beer...

    This Weekend: IPA and IIPA

Finally dry-hopped an IPA (Ninkasi clone) that I moved across town while fermenting 2 weeks ago, should be ready to bottle in the next two weekends. Also brewed a California Red IIPA (5th beer) and installed my first blow-off tube yesterday! 12 hours after pitching, krausen of small bubbles...
