5G carboy sufficient as a second primary?

That's what I figured. I don't mind doing a 4 gallon batch - I've really been considering doing some half-batches, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea to get too far away from the original recipe on my second batch. Well, after spending on the inital set-up I was hoping to slow down spending...

5G carboy sufficient as a second primary?

So I got the 6.5G bucket and a 5G carboy with my kit from Midwest. I'm planning on brewing my first batch this weekend, but I'm anxious to get another batch going soon after. I plan on putting the cream ale in the primarty bucket and going long primary only, which leaves me with the 5G carboy...

Need advice regarding running temperature controller into freezer

Freezer is already pucrhased, and was vetted against chest freezer, Basically it came down to (1) footprint...chest freezer was going to have to be small, the upright fits perfectly (2) I think the dumping cold air thing is probably a bit overplayed...how often is everyone opening their fridge...

    Dutch’s Cadillac Fermentation Chamber Build

I came across this thread while searching online for the manual for this freezer, but I also asked posted a thread on the beginners forum this morning about setting the freezer up with the same temp controller...

Need advice regarding running temperature controller into freezer

I found the model number and while searching for the manual online a HBT thread showed up with how one person here set up the same freezer...https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/dutch-s-cadillac-fermentation-chamber-build-251579/

Need advice regarding running temperature controller into freezer

Yeah, unfortunately I can't figure out what model this is, just the brand. I've looked for an identifying number all over the fridge but can't find it.

Need advice regarding running temperature controller into freezer

Thanks for your thoughts on this. I know the mass is smaller but I thought the probe in water would still be more representative of the actual temperature in the fermentation vessel than having the probe on the outside, but it sounds like that is wrong. Let me ask you, does taping the probe and...

Need advice regarding running temperature controller into freezer

That option certainly makes me the most nervous. I really don't know anything about freezers except they're cold. This is a frost-free so the racks don't do the cooling. I still don't know what's in the side though, and how good of an option drilling tnto the freezer is.

Need advice regarding running temperature controller into freezer

I'm close to being ready to brew. I got the freezer off CL a few weeks ago, the Johnson A419 controller came in the mail today, and in a few days I'll get the equipment kit and other goodies SWMBO got me for my birthday that have been sitting upstairs for a couple weeks (painful to just have...

Worst Commercial Beer You've Ever Had?

I actually searched this thread to see if anyone else had hated this beer. Shiner's Ruby Red is also the worst I've had. Billed as having ginger and grapefruit I was worried I'd be wasting my money, but I enjoyed their other seasonals so I grabbed a six pack. It just had way to much ginger...

    Anyone know who painted this?

This is a great find. We have a weimaraner and my wife has some of the Wegman stuff that this reminds me of. I've already printed this out to hang ont my freezer/fermentation chamber.

    Wort Chiller Pump Choice

Thanks for the info on your 264gph pump working. I think I'll go with that one since I can get it for about $12 + shipping right now. I was looking at the bigger one, but there's a lot of stuff to buy initially so that extra $20 may be better spent elsewhere. Regarding this earlier post, is...

    Wort Chiller Pump Choice

Do you think one that's three times the power would work (and work for 30 ft of 3/8" coil)? I'm looking at one that is 800gph and 12.5' lift compared to the one I linked to that was 264gph/4.5'. It's a bit more than I was hoping to spend at $40, but probably about the same I'd drop on a...

    Wort Chiller Pump Choice

I like the power of the bilge pump, having to deal with the battery makes it seem like a hassle though and an extra expense.

    Wort Chiller Pump Choice

Good point. I've also read some threads on people using this later in the cooling process and using just the IC first. What is the rationale? The whole reason I was looking at pre-chillers (then pumps) is more than just speeding up the process - I need something to cool my tap water or I...

    Wort Chiller Pump Choice

I ran across this thread as I was searching for information on pumps. I'm just getting started (equiment collection phase - hope to brew my first batch at the end of the month) and was going to get or build a pre-chiller (I live in Texas and the tap water isn't cold) but I like this idea of...

Just starting. What other equipment should I get?

Thanks. Just watched a video on the wine thief. That's an easy add - inexpensive and looks like it will make things easier. I'll check your thread.

Just starting. What other equipment should I get?

I got the Palmer book about 10 days ago and have enjoyed reading it. It's certainly helping me put together and understand the things I'm reading about on this site, and I would also recommend it to anyone else starting out who might be reading this thread.

Just starting. What other equipment should I get?

I'm glad you brought this up because I was about to ask about it. I came across this before Clann redirected me to the bottle rinsers he was referring to. I watched videos on both so I understand how both are used. So, I guess I having both would be good? The bottlle washer that shoots a jet of...
