    Beer too sweet

I had problems with my airlock in the primary as well, but felt it was corrected. Doesn't matter....since I boogered up the recipe! So... if I understand this correctley since the hops came in the pellet form, they go directly in the pot. So... the next batch of beer will stay 7 days in the...

    Beer too sweet

I'm a complete idiot. What are the "hop socks" for then? I almost threw them in the pot, but thought I'd have bunch of debris like weeds floating in my beer. Also the recipe said if the Airlock stopped activity (and you are using a secondary fermenter) then it's time to transfer, but if you...

    Beer too sweet

Yeah, I added the bittering hops just like you. Same boiling time. Can't tell you the amount, they were pre measured. I wasn't sure about how to add them so I stuffed them in the sock and threw them in the pot and disposed of the mess after the transfer...there were no directions about that...

    Beer too sweet

IBUs = 15... I don't know what this should be to make me happy. I know I have a lot of homework to do! Thanks for the link I will research it. The pilsner recipe I have the IBUs = 30-40 is this barking up the right tree?

    Beer too sweet

Thanks to everyones help...I made beer! It's not very good beer, but it's beer. It's very sweet like wine. I like a very strong almost bitter beer. My question is, was it the recipe or me? Brewer's Best American Light. Also, what would you suggest I try for my second attempt. I bought a...

When do you read the alcohol by volume

Excellent information. It's in there already, I guess I will let it be for a while. Thanks everyone for the helpful conversions, clears things up a bit.

When do you read the alcohol by volume

I'm such a newbie...well, sounds like I should avoid waiting out the secondary and just go ahead and bottle it? At this point I'm not doing myself or the beer any good am I? It's my very first batch, I don't think I need to attempt to clear or mellow anything yet, or do I?

When do you read the alcohol by volume

Thanks! Everyone is so helpful! I can't thank you all enough, this is so fun!

When do you read the alcohol by volume

Oh, good grief. Thank You. So, I just need to attempt to hit my final gravity and I should be OK. How close is close enough in a case like this?

When do you read the alcohol by volume

I'm still not grasping this, sorry. At what point do you get your reading for alcohol? I have transfered to the secondary and my sample was still high, FG should be 1.007 - 1.010 and I am at 1.014. My alcohol by Volume target on the recipe is 4.0% - 4.5%, that means I'm only at about 2% right?

IS there anything I can do?

Very helpful words Tenchiro. I have been feeling very itimidated with all the reading I have been doing...every book makes me feel like I'm out of my league. I couldn't wait to start brewing then, I read I wasn't a scientist and felt ashamed. Thanks for your encouraging words.

I think I burned my wort

Augh, Yeah. Now that clears things up A LOT for me. Thanks for the link. Hope I NEVER do that!

I think I burned my wort

Thank You! I shall carry on. I am so worried!(Sorry) I love all the help I can get here, everyone is so helpful. Thanks again!

I think I burned my wort

So, I thought my first batch went pretty well, however; cleaning up I noticed the bottom of my kettle was scorched. Have I ruined it? It was obviously the shape of the burner, but pretty small.

    Stopper Troubles

Ooh, simple. I was told to spray it with a sanitizer fist. (I must have left out a step) I shall follow your instructions. Thank You.

    Stopper Troubles

I just brewed my fist batch and my airlock does not seem (to me) to be fitting correctly. The rubber stopper keeps drifting all the way to the top of the neck of the carboy. Can anyone help?

    The hydrometer is my nemesis

Ooh, now I feel really stupid. The cheap plastic tube it came in does actually work. Thank you so much! (I thought it was way to narrow). You guys are a big help, my husband is not!! Thanks again.

    The hydrometer is my nemesis

It did not come with its own jar, but I have a graduated cylinder that I have filled all the way up and it always sinks.

    The hydrometer is my nemesis

I feel very foolish! I have NO experience with a hydrometer. (only a refractometer). This will be my first attempt at home brew and I'm almost ready, however; I can not figure out this hydrometer. Every attempt I make to calibrate is a failure. The directions say it will float. This is not...
