    Aluminum for HLT?

Crap, sorry folks. I did a search but for some reason this thread didn't turn up (in Similar Threads) until I posted mine.

    Aluminum for HLT?

I've read everything I can find on the debate about using aluminum for a boil kettle, and understand that the prejudice against it is probably just that -- a prejudice -- but let's say for the sake of argument that I want to upgrade to stainless, is there any possible reason why an aluminum pot...

First Brew... Not digging the aftertaste

For what it's worth (precisely one data point in a large number of variables) I recently experienced a harsh (possibly "bitey") aftertaste in several of my batches after switching to well water with a high iron content. Switched back to spring water and all is well.

What is the oldest piece of clothing that you still wear regularly?

Mostly tour shirts I refuse to give up and wear every now and again for nostalgia's sake -- Jane's Addiction from 1990, REM from the Green tour, etc. Can't say I wear them "regularly" though.

lil help with Bulk Hop Storage and Use

Thanks for the advice Calder. For what it's worth, if anyone else out there is impatient and feeling MacGyver-ish, 5 quarters weigh 1 oz ;-)

    Obnoxious Football Trash Talk Thread

Bit ironic how many panties are in a bunch over DeSean. I think his antics fit right in with an "obnoxious football trash talk thread." Then again, he is on my team ;-)

Whoa, that is a killer deal. Thanks for the heads up.

lil help with Bulk Hop Storage and Use

OK, so I ordered 4 lbs of hops from hops direct and they arrived frozen due to the temp outside, so I tossed the vacuum sealed bags in my freezer. Now I want to use some (snow day = brew day), and feel like an idiot asking these questions but: A) I guess I have to thaw the whole lb. or...

    I actually never liked beer!

I can't say I ever hated beer, but my wife and I laugh all the time about that fact that a few years ago I would state out loud to anyone who would listen that I was done drinking beer, that I didn't enjoy it anymore, and I was only drinking liquor. Then I somehow fell into this hobby and I...

Yet Another Newb's Water Report Results

Thanks Bobby. Been playing with TH's Water Calculator while waiting for comment, your tips on additions helped me make sense of things... I'm waffling back and forth between extract and all grain brews right now. Given the temp outside, I'll likely be doing extract batches for the next month or...

Yet Another Newb's Water Report Results

Yet another relative newbie humbly asking for comment and/or analysis. Anything jump out? Look decent for brewing IPAs and Browns? pH 7.8 Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) Est 145 Electrical Conductivity, mmho/cm 0.24 Cations / Anions, me/L 2.2 / 2.0 ppm Sodium, Na 18 Potassium, K 3 Calcium...

    Show us your Kegerator

Thanks. All our appliances are brushed steel, so I was pretty psyched to find the fridge for $35 on Craiglist.

My wife was nice (and thirsty) enough to let me install ours in our kitchen counter.

Help diagnosing low OG in first and second AG

Thanks for the input. I've been using a decent digital liquid thermometer, so hopefully that is as accurate as I need to be.

Help diagnosing low OG in first and second AG

I'll be sure to take a picture of the grain next time. I actually meant to today, but forgot in the process of the brew. As far as I know, I went from somewhere just north of 6 gallons preboil to a little over 5 gallons post boil. I have measurement lines on both my pot and my bucket.

Help diagnosing low OG in first and second AG

Well, I'm still at a loss. Just brewed up BierMuncher's Centennial Blonde, which has what should be a very doable 70% efficiency built into the recipe and I still didn't quite hit my number (1.037 OG instead of 1.040). I held the proper mash temp for the proper time. Stirred like mad during...

    Rhetorical Disfluencies that I Hate

Surprised that no one has mentioned the egregious and ubiquitous misuse of the first person personal pronoun. Several entire generations, it seems, are scared to death of using the word "me," even when used as the object of a sentence. You wouldn't say, "Give all your beer to I" so why would you...
