First brew, hot wort, and siphon

barracudamagoo, congrats on the brew session. i went through the exact same thing. i melted my siphon during a test run. for the batch, i used the braided line and it seemed to do ok. starting the siphon was not as easy as i hoped it would have been. i would imagine the boil would...

    Rubber stopper problem

+2 I had the same problem with my current batch. After racking it and putting the stopper in, I started cleaning stuff up. When I looked back at the carboy I thought... huh... that thing was down in there further. I used a paper towel as well. I thought a clean paper towel would be the...

    Counterflow Chiller Tutorial

i can tell you what doesn't work. that's the regular vinyl tubing or using an auto siphon to start it. i ended up with some of that reinforced tubing from lowes. i want to say it was 5/8" tubing (at .60/ft.). it held up pretty well for me on my last batch. now if i can just find a way...

Batch number two... in the fermenter

thanks for the tips! i'm planning on attempting an AG by the end of the summer. i want to get the full steps and all down before i jump into that world. as far as fruiting beer, i'm not sure how to even begin experimenting with that. i guess i could use the search tool. :) eric

Batch number two... in the fermenter

it's the nylon strainer, not really a grain bag. it came with my beer kit. i guess it was ok to use it. if not, too late now ;) i don't have a screen / false bottom in the kettle so figured i'd try to remove as much trub as i could. as far as batch #3, i don't know yet. got any ideas...

Batch number two... in the fermenter

Well, the brewing process is complete for batch number two. I brewed an American Amber this time. Last night it was fermenting nicely... bubble, bubble, bubble... All-in-all I'd say the process went pretty smooth. There were a few things that I learned and I'll put them in place next...

    a little help...

would i need some 'filter' or screen in addition to that valve? or would the valve do ok for now? i wouldn't be opposed to that, but drilling through that $60.00 pot could be a little tense. :) although it is a dedicated brew kettle. i don't think i have the time to get a pump and...

    a little help...

so, i built the counterflow chiller that's listed in the diy section. it was pretty easy and it seemed to work awesome with my test case. however, i did melt or disfigure my auto siphon in the process. i learned that this is NOT the tool for the job. heh, whoops! :cross: my setup is...

    Counterflow Chiller Tutorial

MajorWoody, how do you start your siphon and what do you use to siphon from the kettle? i just built one of these and i'm trying it out for the first time in a few days. i want to have some sort of 'plan' when i put it to use. i do not have a valve on my brew kettle, so i've ran different...

    and we have beer!

woollybugger2, congrats on the brown. was it a wild fish? i'm taking some of my Blue Line Ale down to the beach in two weeks for a fishing trip! of course those glasses are custom painted. i didn't want spray paint flaking off and ruining my beer and sticking to my teeth. :) it was a...

    and we have beer!

I updated my blog, BrewingExperiment.com with my 'first taste' result. and... we have beer!!! :mug: it's better than i thought it would be too. I'm going to wait another week or so before putting a handful of bottles in the fridge. all-in-all i'd say that it's pretty good and i can't...

And I present beer number one!!! with pics

Yeah, I was pretty thankful to have them there. One of them is an experienced brewer and I learned a lot from him. I also had a crew at brewing day... guess they all want some beer too :mug: I'm fine with that, it's the least I can do. BTW, didn't think my shirt would have ever...

    secondary transfer questions & pics

heh, sorry about that. :) i named it for fly fishing reasons. i figured it was a good fit; blue line streams are the first in the linear flow of rivers since they don't have anything feeding them. this was my first beer and i didn't have any experience. plus i like to fish blue line streams...

    secondary transfer questions & pics

thanks for all the input! my initial volume was about a half gallon shy of five gallons. when i took the initial gravity reading, it was pretty close (to the 'suggested' OG) so i didn't add the additional water. this may have been a bad thing, not sure??? i figured that it may be a little...

    Mixing DME to avoid clumping

i did my first batch a couple weeks back and i used warm / hot water of my boil. i put it in after i pulled the grains from their 20 minute steeping time. it did clump up a little when i first poured it in. i poured it in slowly and stirred while pouring. after stirring for a few (maybe 5)...
