3 Stars gets grain from two wholesalers - Brewers Supply Group (BSG) and LD Carlson. It looks like BSG offers has the Chateau malt products, but the Chateau Spelt malt might require a special order. Seems to be produced by Castle Malt, which BSG does carry, but they don't list the spelt on their...

$12/gallon!! That's insane. I head up to Heyser Farms, on New Hampshire Ave, just north of the Intercounty Connector, and buy cider for about $5-6/gallon. Yeah, it's not some special cider maker blend, but it's unpasteurized apple juice, and it works well.

In the middle of a turbid mash, probably not going to get a chance to head over today. Have fun, everyone.

I'm not buying any grain this go around, but I would like to come by and bring some beer. When is the pickup? The 16th, or the 23rd?

Bootleg Biology: Mad Fermentationist Brett Saison

I bottled my mulberry sour on Monday, with some champagne yeast. The recipe was this: 3 kg Weyermann pilsner 1 kg Weyermann pale wheat 1 kg Weyermann Vienna Single infusion mash at about 152F for an hour Added a kg of table sugar and did a 60 minute boil, 2 oz Styrian Golding (4% alpha)...

Saw on the web page that the tentative pickup date is August 12th. That's also the date for 3 Stars 5th Anniversary bash, which starts at noon for "VIP tickets" and at 1:00 PM for non VIP. It seems likely the grain pickup will be a different date.

WLP653 or WY5526 (or something else)

Was thinking of adding some of the Wyeast 3278 after about a year or so. I'll take a look at the Yeast Bay - haven't heard of them before. Thanks!!

WLP653 or WY5526 (or something else)

I bought a bunch of sour cherries at my local farmers market (12 quarts of them) and all of them are in the freezer, with one goal in mind. I want to make one hell of a lot of "lambic" I also have a full size oak barrel I'm planning to ferment in. Planning to brew up about 60 total gallons of...

Bootleg Biology: Mad Fermentationist Brett Saison

I brewed up a saison with a primary fermentation of WLP565 back on the first Saturday in May. I racked it to a five gallon barrel about three weeks later, and put it in my outdoor shed that has no temperature control. Last week, I pureed about a pound of mulberries I picked from a neighbor's...

Looks like there are some great crops of sour cherries this year, so I'm thinking of a big Lambic project. Anyone want to do splits on Dingemans pilsen and Rahr unmalted wheat?

Wish I could be there on the 29th. My wife and I are heading to Ann Arbor for my nephew's graduation from Michigan. I am going to try to visit Adventures in Home Brewing while we're there though, so there is that :) Hoping I can pick up my grain before we leave.
