Spike Brewing HLT Not Firing up

I'd start with a volt meter to isolate the problem, checking the receptacle first to make sure that its delivering the current to the plug. After that it's the connection to the element. On my boil coil the plug into the kettle would make that easy, but I'm unfamiliar with Spike's system to...

    Which electric controller?

I need to as well but it changes depending on batch size. My 3 gal batches ramp almost twice as fast as my 4.5 gallon ones. Mostly not a big deal for me since I do BIAB and don't often do a step mash.

    Which electric controller?

No, you'd program 2 mash steps under one profile. It'll hold up to 9 mash profiles/programs but within each profile you can create a number of steps. So in your example you'd select mash profile #1 and then under the first step you'd enter the temp 154 and hit enter and then it'll ask for the...

Adding malts in a biab bag to strikewater?

I put the bag in once strike temp is reached and then pour in the grains from a 5 gal bucket. I'd think the powdered grain flour would make a mess if you poured the grain in the bag first.

    Which electric controller?

What you want to do is program the mash and boil but not hit the start button on the program until you've hit your desired mash or boil temp. The timer then will be in sync. Helps after the first couple of brews to go back over the instruction booklet and then some of the operations make more...

BrewCommander - Impressive offering from John

Yes, @Bobby M that's what I ran into a variance in ramp temp when I went from a 4.5 gal batch BIAB to a 3 gallon. I noticed how much faster my degrees per minute increased when I was heating to strike temp. It was my first step mash and I didn't consider at the time how it would affect the mash...

BrewCommander - Impressive offering from John

Once the 20 min 120f nash step was done it ramped to 152F and I guess I'll have to watch it closer next time to see if it went by allotted ramp degrees per minute or when it hit the 152F.

BrewCommander - Impressive offering from John

I did my first step mash a week ago with a witbier just to try it. Mashed in at 120 for 20 minutes and set second step for 152 for 55 min and pressed start. Controller held mash at 120 for 20 min and then ramped to 152 and didn't start the timer until it reached 152 and held that for 55 min...

New BIAB setup. Ss brewtech or Spike? Utah Diesel or Arbor Fab?

Both vendors you're looking at have very nice kettles and I heavily shopped and researched each as you are doing. I still have a smaller SsBrewtech kettle from before I moved to all grain and use their brewbucket fermenters as well. I surprised myself by going with Blichmann ekettle with the...

    BIAB induction indoors: avantco burner

Brew bag rests right on the boil coil and maintains the temp during the entire mash. Smallest size batch I can make and keep the coils covered in liquid is 3 gal, so I usually plan a min 3.5 gal batch to make sure.

    BIAB induction indoors: avantco burner

I had to baby sit the IC3500 as well, BIAB, though I never had any scorching problems. Maintaining a constant mash temp was an issue, plus as you mentioned it was hard to multi task and not have something get away from you. Dave Knott at High Gravity hooked me up with a Blichmann 10gal 240v...

How long do YOU boil ?

I go with what Beer Smith tells me for my mash and boil times. Mostly 60 minutes for boil unless I need to go longer to reduce the liquid volume.

    Recirc, Wilser Bag, Crush Size

I'm disagreeing with that statement because I think maintaining an even accurate temperature during the mash does affect your beer. There are so many ways to go about this. I BIAB and to avoid temperature stratification I run my whirlpool during full volume mash and stir once or twice during...

    High Gravity Custom eBIAB System

I had Dave fix me up with the 10 gal 240v Blichmann kettle w/whirlpool port kit from Blichmann, the Brew Commander, and I already had the Riptide pump. Love the whole system for my BIAB. I do 3.5- 5 gal max batches. The Boil Coil doesn't bother my Brew Bag, and I run the whirlpool during the...

    Vic Secret hop pairing ?

I used Vic Secret recently on a recipe I got from AHA that was a NHC winner last year called "Big Boi Booty Sweat". Lol, I renamed mine "Night Moves" after the Bob Seger song. I bittered with Warrior and the recipe paired Citra, Mosaic, Idaho 7, and Vic Secret. It used a lot of hops but turned...

    BIAB induction indoors: avantco burner

Sure. My current set up is a 10gal 240v Blichmann kettle with factory whirlpool port kit installed, Brew Commander 240v controller, and Riptide pump. Only con I can think of was the cost of the upgrade compared to the induction burner. Plus side are all the things that I wanted to accomplish...

    BIAB induction indoors: avantco burner

Not sure how thick. I used a 5.5 SsBrewtech kettle and a 7.5gal Anvil kettle on the avantco. Neither had any problems with adding heat during the mash, but I never went above 800w .

    BIAB induction indoors: avantco burner

I still have my Avantco and when I was using it for my BIAB I had my best mash control by using the wattage function at 500w when I need to add heat during the mash. I would need to stir it to keep even heat distribution, and it would take a couple minutes to raise the temps back up, but it...

    Recirc, Wilser Bag, Crush Size

True, I'm probably technically whirlpooling, but at 7gpm it keeps my temps right for me and my grain bed nice and fluid with no stuck sparge issues and little stratification. For me and my BIAB, I like it. Since I've never recirculated from the top I'm not in the position to say yea or nay to...

BrewCommander - Impressive offering from John

Nice video! The BC certainly made my brew day a lot easier and more enjoyable. It's like having an assistant watching over things in the garage, while I duck inside during mash to weigh out hops, check mash ph, get lunch, a cup of coffee, etc.
