    Measuring water and wort volumes

I imagine you have to reapply the sharpie marks every couple of uses, right? Wouldn't submerging the pvc in the boil eventually wear those marks off? I do like the fact that you have half gallon marks on yours. I'm thinking I could use larger drill bits to mark gallons and smaller drill...

    Measuring water and wort volumes

I bought a 5 foot piece of food grade PVC and drilled holes in it at each gallon mark in my boil kettle. I used a gallon container of water and just kept adding one gallon of water, marking the pvc with a hole until I reach 8 gallons or so. By submerging the pipe in my boil, I should be able...

    beer math question

I much prefer this equation to the OP's. I'm brewing a 12% barleywine (partial grain) this weekend and Chapter 6 in Ray Daniel's Designing Great Beers provides great examples of calculating the amount of DME needed to hit the target gravity. Great book!

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Bourbon Vanilla Porter (AG)

Must make this again, only 5 bombers left!!! Also looking to brew Denny's 'Old Stoner' Barleywine recipe soon. The man's a genius!

    HomeBrewTalk 2012 Big Giveaway

::Crosses Fingers:: 7 Gallon Conical Fermenter here I come! What happens if SWMBO makes me return it? Just kidding, that would never happen, I'd just end up single.

    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

Gave this some thought last night and I won't to be so hard headed. I'll go ahead and lower the base malt and add some extract. If I reduce the base malt from 20 to 13lbs, how much extract would I need to add? Do you recall the conversion of grain to extract? Any tips on when to add the...

    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

P.s. I thought I was dangerously close to overflowing on my last BIAB due to the large grain bill. I think I was mashing at a higher ratio though. Will double check to avoid 'cruel learning experience' on brew day. ;)

    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

That's my concern too. Using the greenbayrackers 'Can I mash it' calculator, it should all fit in the kettle, but I don't know if there is room enough to mix well, etc. The 1.25qts/lb ratio should be good enough, no? I suppose I could cut the grain bill down another few lbs or so, refigure...

    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

Hey guys - looking to try my first BIAB barleywine. I've got 3 successful BIAB batches done and would really like to brew something my brew partner would enjoy (i.e. MALTY). Please let me know what you think of the changes, keeping in mind I'm limited to an 11g kettle. Note: I basically...

    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

I just ordered that book on Amazon. Also picked up 'How to Brew' and "Yeast: The Practical Guide to Fermentation'. My brew book section just quadrupled! I think I will go with the suggestion to max out the kettle at 18lbs and then supplement with DME to hit OG. Thanks for everyone's...

    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

Does anyone have a successful BIAB English Barleywine recipe they can share? I'm limited to my 11g boil kettle, but would still like to brew one up as my friend (often my 'brewing assistant') is a huge BW fan. I'd like to stick with 5 - 5.5 gallons of finished product, as that is what my glass...

    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

Happy Friday all! My first AG/BIAB batch has been in primary only a week and I'm ready to fire up the kettle again! I'm attempting a Pliny clone this weekend. This method is so quick and clean and worlds better than extract brewing for me.

    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

I ended up brewing the vanilla bourbon porter recipeby denny conn. The 17 # grain bill with 8.5 gallons of water maxed out my 11 gallon kettle. I had about a cm of space available during the mash. The bike stand worked great for draining the mash!

    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

Thanks, Seven. Today is brew day. I'm already excited to get started. While I don't have a pulley system rigged, I'm going to try using my Park Tools brand bicycle repair stand to drain the wort. I'll test it out first to make sure it withstands the weight, but it can easily hold my 30+...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Bourbon Vanilla Porter (AG)

I haven't done the Brew in a Bag method before, this is my first. I've double milled my grain which I've read should help with my efficiency. I've decided to do the no-sparge method as shown in the BIAB sticky. I'll let you know how it turns out! A few last minute items from the homebrew...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Bourbon Vanilla Porter (AG)

I plan on brewing this on Friday or Saturday (first all grain beer!) and using the BIAB method. I've previously brewed 2 extract kits. I have an 11 gallon kettle and was considering doing a no-sparge method. After reading about BIAB, would I be correct in assuming I would need to increase...

    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

Hey all - looking for some help regarding my ability to brew the HopSlam clone recipe offered by Schweaty. Looking to do this as a no-sparge, but not sure if I have the capacity. What I have available: 44Qt Bayou Classic boil kettle (with matching basket) Grain bill per Schweaty is...
