Quick review of my mild recipe (and some yeast choice help)

In the 2 darker session ales that I have done I've used WLP002, English Ale, with great success. Using a 2000ml starter for this low a gravity should really give you a great fermentation and super clean beer.

    brix level for ripe niagara

Friend wants to pick his Niagara grapes, is there a specific brix level they should be before harvest? Is there a general range for all grapes or is it dependent on variety? I'd really like to find a chart that gives recommended brix levels for different grapes. Specifically, concord...

    First Cider in the Fermenter

I've found that cider and wine don't take days to ferment - they take weeks, even months. You better get a few cases of Bells and tell the GF something that sounds plausible; "the yeast didn't flocculation enough to give the proper level of sedimentation" or "while fermenting the wort, the...

    possible fert burn?

It may sound funny but search for problems with growing "pot". Hops is in a very similar family as marijuana, and as such there are lots of people who have interest in the problems associated with growing "weed". We, as up-standing citizens, can learn from these hippie stoners and grow better...

+1 for the gentle roll to rouse the yeast. Give 'um a stir and wait a little longer.

    Dry hop Floaters - help

Thanks Yooper, The only problem I have is that when I transfer from my black fitting through my beer line to my glass I get hops particles. I don't see any difference from transferring from a keg to a glass and a keg to a keg. Does the fact that I'm going through a closed system (keg to...

    Hand tap to sanke coupler

After seeing your post I did some digging and it looks like you may be able to do this. I went to Micromatic.com and there is a pretty big difference in the main assembly for sanke connectors that are for hand pumps and sanke connectors for CO2. Below is the hand-pump type and the CO2 type...

    Dry hop Floaters - help

I kegged 10-gallons of my "American Homebrew Day" IPA and force carb'd it. I'm now pouring lots of dry hops floaters that apparently got pulled in from the fermenter. As I pour more pints it is getting better, but I've got an event that I need to bring one of these kegs to in a week and want...

Help Me Find a Solution Blichmann and Shirron Users Please!!!

I don't try and filter out anything, I just let it settle to the bottom on the boil kettle before I draw the wort off. The valve on my boil kettle sits about 3 inches above the bottom of the pot. If I want to get to the absolute bottom of the pot I have a down tube I can use, but for hoppy...

Spend my $$$ on going AG or kegging?

+1 kegging. Bottling is the worst part of brewing, skip it, and you will brew more beer.

Late hops for my red ale - simcoe or cascade?

I think Simcoe is a little more harsh than Cascade. I'd use the Cascade, I think it is more "west coast, American" in flavor. If you really want to use the Simcoe perhaps dry hop; you did mention how great they smelled. Cheers! Schoolmaster

    goodbye kit, hello confusion

While not a direct answer to your question... I just formulated my very first recipe today; I've previously used kits for every batch. I downloaded the Beer Smith software and it really helped me to hit target gravities, SRM and IBUs. It took a ton of confusion out of trying to design my...

    Kegging equipment help!!?!

The fridge I have it freezer on top / fridge on bottom and holds (4) corny kegs or 1/6th commercial kegs (they are both basically the same size. I like to have (1) commercial brew on and room for (3) homebrews. Whale is right, when it is on tap it somehow goes much faster than in bottles!

    Travel with full carboy

With the AHA, National Homebrew Day this Saturday my homebrew club is doing a big brew. Several of us are going to meet and brew at one of the member's homes. I live a 15 min drive from there and wanted to get any tips or ideas for transporting (2) full 5-gallon carboys home. I've traveled...
