I'm making an all grain beer...fun!

It took me a while to figure out what BIAB means... no, that would be too sensible. I'm doing a BIABGSSPOTSWLOLPASAABGM (brewing in a big giant stainless steel pot on the stove with lots of little pots and strainers and a big giant mess) I now have two gallons of a murky, reddish brown liquid...

I'm making an all grain beer...fun!

After several successes with some extract beers, I ordered some all-grain kits from the Brooklyn Brew Shop. I'm making the "everyday IPA" right now. I'm just typing this as I wait a couple of minutes to go stir the mash some more... So far, so good. The mash went from being oatmeal-y to being...

    Pop-top mystery.

Good news! I've discovered why the bottles lost pressure. It seeped out along the mold lines in the plastic caps. Every beer that has been flat has had prominent flash lines on the plastic: the smoother ones are fine. I'm going to use a hobby knife to scrape off the plastic ridge, and they...

    Pop-top mystery.

Luckily I found a great beef stew recipe that uses stout. Doesn't matter if it's flat or not.:mug:

    Pop-top mystery.

Going to try batch priming. I think I will look at the bottle stoppers too though. I think some of them are leaking.

    Pop-top mystery.

I just did a search for "swingtop bottles" on the forum, and encountered several other posts by people with the same problem. Looks like I will have to maybe tighten the bails and make sure there is no mold lines on the plastic stoppers. This seems to be causing the trouble.

    Pop-top mystery.

Well, it requires pressure to force the bail down and compress the seal, so I thought they were seated properly. I'm wondering about it now of course. I examined one of the stoppers and it looks like at some point they did release some pressure, because there is a little beer stain around the...

    Pop-top mystery.

Well, I decided to buy some nice "pop top" bottles to put my beer in. I just opened the fourth bottle that didn't carbonate. I brewed a pilsener a while ago, and the first two that I opened were completely flat. All the other ones were perfectly fizzy. Then, I opened a bottle of stout I brewed a...

Pretty good luck with Mr Beer

The shortest amount of time in bottles was two weeks for the Pilsner, but the stout that was flat was more than six weeks. The thing is, all the rest of the beers from the batch have been perfectly carbonated. It really looks as though the bottles in question didn't get any priming sugar. I only...

Pretty good luck with Mr Beer

I just wanted to share some good news about the beer kit my wife bought me for christmas. I just opened a bottle of "St Patrick's Irish stout" that I brewed about six weeks ago. I used the normal 2 cans of malt but also added a package of that "booster" stuff that came with the fermenter as...

Help, why does my oatmeal stout taste like teriyaki sauce?

I haven't brewed much, but I have been drinking a lot of different types of beer lately to try and get some ideas for what I might like to try to make in the future. I am drinking a "St Ambroise Oatmeal stout" right now while I read this, and I was thinking about the first time I ever tried...

A lot of "trub" in bottles

Ah, excellent. I am excited about this stout because I added some stuff to it. I didn't go crazy, but I added some molasses and some of that "booster" sugar that comes with the original kit, which I didn't use at that time. It will probably not be as exciting as some of the beer you guys...

A lot of "trub" in bottles

Hi everybody. This Christmas my wife gave me a "mr beer" kit. She also ordered several of their "all malt" kits, and I have just made the second one. I know serious hobbyists outgrow the little Mr. Beer fermenter and recipes, but I have been fascinated by the whole process. The first batch, a...
