advice, opinions, critiques on this weekends BIPA recipe

Thanks NB! Great write up on CDA style. I have been thinking about hops for this style for a while. I have already brewed one batch with cascade and centennial and i did enjoy the contrast between the citrus and roast, but I am wondering if an earthy, minty, spicy hop profile might serve...

    Corney kegs?

yes, and then send to me for a thorough quality control analysis.

advice, opinions, critiques on this weekends BIPA recipe

I received so much good advice for a future IPA recipe that I thought I better put my Black IPA recipe I am brewing this weekend out there for some tweaks before I get started on Saturday. I really am indebted to the wealth of information in this forum. Thanks for any help and suggestions...

    What went wrong?

Welcome Santhalas! With the limited information you gave it is hard to tell what went wrong. On future posts, try to give your recipe with your fermentation details. Also, try describing why you think it tastes/smells bad. What do you taste and smell? Sanitation and temperature control are...

    good point, thanks.

    New IPA recipe review

Is this the case even when doing a full boil? I know it is an issue when doing partial boils, but didn't realize it was as vital when doing full boils. Thanks for any clarity! :mug:

Didn't hit my gravity, .01 off

If the yeast attenuates as expected, you could end up with a drier beer than you originally attended. But some people intentionally start off with a lower OG to purposely get this result. I am sure it will be great! :mug:

    New IPA recipe review

Good catch! It is actually a 5 min addition. A 10 min addition brings the IBUs up to 91.7 and the bitter/gravity up to 1.34, which I have to admit makes me salivate a little just thinking about the hoppy-bitter goodness. :) However, I am trying to show restraint and pay attention to the...

    New IPA recipe review

Here is how I switched it up. I added a little more Munich LME to give me more color so I would not have to use as much crystal to get to a SRM over 10 (less than 15). I also reduced the total crystal malt bill and switched out C60 for 45. As always, comments are welcome. LME 78% 9 lbs...

    New IPA recipe review

I was trying to get a little bit darker of a color, like a nice orange hue, with out going to a red ale in SRM. I think the C120 could help me get there without using too much; hopefully adding just a little interesting character in the background. In regards to not being too sweet, I...

Jsmith and Terrapin, thanks for the suggestions.

    New IPA recipe review

I appreciate the clarification and I can see where you might want to throttle back on the dry hops. When I look at the hop additions you suggest, the calculated IBU's (I know it doesn't always relate to real world) is 98 (tinseth scale). It seems like it may be a bit outside the American IPA...

    New IPA recipe review

can you clarify? are you saying you would reverse the order of the hops at those amounts and times or that you would add these hops to the boil in addition to what is already there? Thanks!

yes, here is a link that might help you out more. :mug:

    New IPA recipe review

I would appreciate any feedback on this IPA recipe, in particularly on the use of the Munich LME and Jade hops. These are two ingredients I have not used before. I am brewing this in march so I have plenty of time to play around with it. Thanks for your input. :mug: LME 9 lbs Briess...

question on brewing my first batch

Can you give us your specific recipe with quantities? If you do a full 5 gallon boil with the ingredients you got with a kit intended to only have a 2.5 gallon boil with a 2.5 gallon dilution, then yes you do need to adjust your hops. If you do not, you will essentially double your IBUs.

    Temperature Dropping

Yeast definitely do better when they are at a constant temp vs swinging fluctuation in temperature. What yeast are you using? If you can ensure that the temp will remain constant when you put the belt on then I would go for it and let it sit in the high sixties for the next three weeks...

Cold Crash, Kegging, and Siphon ?s

If you are in CT, you could cold crash outside and then carefully transfer it to your racking area. I cold crash and rack in my garage. You are correct, in that you can get away with not cold crashing more so when kegging. However, if your beer is "super cloudy" I would suggest letting the...

Brewing first batch-have a few questions.

You really need to provide the weight of your ingredients if you would like more insight. No, I would not add any spices on your first brew. Try to figure out what the ingredients you are using taste like before altering a recipe. Regardless, you are going to make beer and (most likely...
