Slightly Smashed Apollo Pale Ale - Input?

What sort of flavours were you getting off of the apollo? I have a pound of apollo sitting in my freezer, and pretty much an identical grain bill sitting in my basement ready for brewing this weekend.

Has anybody from Canada, ordered any products online from Hopdawgs homebrewing?

I tried their Fat Tire clone, and Cream ale partial mash kits, and both made excellent beers. Shipping was pretty reasonable too. These days I order from my LHBS, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend HopDawgs to anyone wanting to try it.

Or if you're worried about using it for bottling, congratulations, you now have a new bucket to store pre-mixed star-san solution!

You know you're a home brewer when?

I think you're also a home-brewer if you first heard the noise and thought "I bet you he has some bottle bombs, it's not someone shooting at him" Also, did anyone notice the scene last season with Jesse sitting at home drinking a Pliny with that woman and kid?

The Complete Joys of (Bulk) Homebrewing

You should try the dry stuff some time. It's great how it clumps up and sticks to everything it touches, plus it gets airborne :)

    Calgary breweries/brewpubs

My personal favorite is Brewsters which has locations all over town. There's also brew brothers which I THINK brews beside the Amsterdam Rhino (which also sells Brew Brothers) downtown, and the Wild Rose brewery, but Wild Rose is a little south. If you're in town during the week I would...

    Cooler Mash Tun Advice

I just bought a braided stainless water hose for a toilet, cut off one end, pushed the braid as far back as I could, cut off as much of the inner hose as possible, stretched it back out, and crimped the cut end shut. Then, just got a brass threaded nipple, ball valve, and threaded barb to attach...

Storing CO2 tank inside kegerator - too cold?

CO2 exists inside the tank as gas and liquid. Basically imagine the tank 80% full of liquid CO2. That liquid will boil off and fill the head-space with CO2 vapor until the pressure rises to a certain equilibrium point. At that point no more liquid will boil off. As you draw CO2 out of the...

    Clever, Stupid, Possible? Wall Thermostat!

The only down-side to using a thermostat that I see is most that I've seen are battery powered which means when the batteries die, your thermostat will no longer trigger to cool your fridge.

    Is Boiling Water Really Necessary?

for what it's worth, I always use straight tap water for rehydrating and topping off, and have never had a problem doing it. It bothered me the first time or two that I tried it, but nothing happened so I just went with it.

Consistently 1 to1.5 gallons more in Pre-boil. Why?

Mash tun dead space would be a very good place to start. The thing with the dead space is once it's full of liquid, it's full. If you measure how much water you mashed-in with, and how much you've colleced with your first runnings, the difference is your dead space. After the initial run-off...

    Propane Burner on a Deck

When I throw my burner on my deck, I usually take the garden hose and spray down the area below the burner so that it's wet.

Good to hear you're ok, Now, get a few more batches fermenting. The pain of waiting is lessened if you're brewing every two weeks or so, and have new batches coming out the other end every two weeks as well.

    Pitching on yeast cake?

I frequently re-use the yeast slurry from one batch to pitch into subsequent batches of the same style, but that's usually using a half or a third of the yeast that ended up in the bottom of the carboy, not the whole cake. The only time I ever pitched on top of a whole cake was just to see what...

    1st bottle day

But in theory they were sanitary when put on the rack, and they remained upside down which would prevent any contaminates from falling into them they could still be sanitary correct? In any case, it takes a few minutes to sanitize the bottles again, and is well worth knowing for sure that...
