    Pitching yeast for lagers

Hi guys - I'm fairly new to home brewing (three batches down) and so far I've done all ales. They've all turned out fairly decent so I'm encouraged. I'm thinking about switching it up and doing a lager this time. I'm set up with a ferment chamber to lager in, but I'm curious to know how...

    Is my first batch ruined

RDWHAHB You are most likely fine. The fact that you blew your lid and now have a steady bubble is a great sign of a strong fermentation. Even though the lid came off and the beer was "exposed", at that point it was cranking out so much C02 that there was very little chance of anything getting...

    bucket vs. carboy?

I use a standard Ale Pale for primary. And when I do a secondary I like to use a bottling bucket.

Newbie Here!! - First Brew - Bock Beer

I think Wyeast makes a California Lager yeast that might work well for this application. I haven't used it myself, but supposedly it brings out lager characteristics at warmer fermentation temps. Just a thought.

Brewed four different recipes-why do they all taste the same?

I've just started home brewing and have done 3 batches so far. All have been decent and drinkable, but yeah, I'm having the same experience. Very different grain bills and different yeasts but somehow, they taste too much alike to me. It's weird actually.

Ground up cashews in your mash.....

Thanks for the link.... I never even thought about the oils. I imagine cashews would have the same issue. I wonder how they fixed that problem.

Ground up cashews in your mash.....

Anybody on here ever try putting crushed (ground) cashews in the mash of an AG brew? I was thinking about trying it and wondered if anyone else done it before. Any thoughts or observations would be appreciated. Thanks folks.

    Conditioning tablets? Thoughts...

Thanks for all the input guys.... This is my first batch, and I had some technical difficulties on brew day so if the priming tabs don't work I suspect that will be the least of my beer's problems and next time I'll try priming sugar solution instead. We'll just see how it goes, and learn from...

    Conditioning tablets? Thoughts...

So do you crush them or anything? Do you find it takes longer for them to work than priming solution?

    Conditioning tablets? Thoughts...

So I'm getting ready to bottle my first batch and bought some conditioning tablets at the home brew store. (Brewers Best) But now I'm seeing some posts on line that suggest they don't work all that well. It seems like most of the posts refer to priming solution so it seems like maybe they...

So I probably need to replace my auto-siphon then, eh?

I've snapped the damn thing in place 15 times (getting to be an expert at it) and it just won't stay in. I used a wooden dowel and some double sided tape thogh and that works for getting it to snap in place. But it must not be hooking well because every time I pull water in it comes right back...

So I probably need to replace my auto-siphon then, eh?

ok, just asking because I was having a little trouble and broke mine this morning lol! Sounds like there's market niche out there for a better design. Wish I was an engineer.

So I probably need to replace my auto-siphon then, eh?

So why won't the auto siphon work if that little plastic piece come out?

    Good to know, thanks Chris.

    Fermentation chamber getting too cool

Nope, no fan hooked up as yet. (That's a good idea though) What I did do was raise the set point a couple degrees higher than what I really want it to be, and tightened down the differential to 1 and it seems to be staying pretty tight to where I want it. Maybe it's just going to be a matter...

    Fermentation chamber getting too cool

I'm setting up a fermentation chamber with an A419 control unit and a new GE chest freezer (7 cubic foot) The freezer is set on it's warmest setting. The issue I'm having is that even though the control turns on and off at the correct temperatures, the freezer continues to cool even after the...

    Johnson Controls A419 Settings

I'm going to jump in here with a question I'm hoping someone can help with. I'm trying to do a ferment chamber with a new 7 Cf GE chest freezer and johnson control A419 control unit. The issue I'm having is that even though the control turns on and off at the correct temperatures, the...
