Irish Red Ale Raging Red Irish Red Ale

Just brewed my 3rd batch of this recipe. This time I only had about 4oz of honey on hand so I used that and threw in 8oz of brown sugar. I don't expect a big taste difference but we'll see...

    Barnwood Keezer

To keep the CO2 from coming out of solution due to difference in temperature, you need to have less than a 10 degree differential between the keezer and the coffin top. Probably could use some fans with a little more umph. I used 4" duct fans with a variable speed control and a false...

    FastFerment conical

Dang. The 1" would definitely work but I'll have to measure as the couple of extra inches may be a problem for my stands. Regardless. Thanks for the parts links! :mug:

Would be nice but I think the FF is 1".

    Show us your Kegerator

Yep I can dig it. Everything has it's tradeoffs. I have to roll mine away from the wall every time I need to go inside it.

What came in the mail for you today?

Nice! I'm digging that SS sink/prep station too!

What came in the mail for you today?

Been using a 5 lb tank for carbing, serving and purging the collection ball on my fermenter. Will be nice not to have to pull the tank out of my keezer every time I need a shot of CO2... ;) Going to trash some of that plastic tubing as well. :mug:

I really like how you framed in the taps/back splash/drip tray. I'm a coffin top guy myself but I'm digging this keezer with collar mounted taps. Nice job!

I love the coffin tops. Nice job! :mug:

    Yet Another Basement Brewery...

Not sure it will be as accurate and consistent as you would like? But who knows?? Search for "STC-1000+". I've seen guys that use Arduinos to flash the STC-1000 temp controllers on those thread(s).

    Grainfather!!

I agree with your statement concerning contractors. But some home owners, if given the option during the build, do opt for 12ga wire throughout. Especially for longer runs. All I'm saying is; Before running a new dedicated 20a ckt, check the wire size of the existing ckt. If it's already 12ga...

    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

I've never done a long term tertiary but I would think you risk more by opening the top, even if it's to add a CO2 shot, then if you just left it alone. The CO2 blanket folks talk/write about is not as thick and stable as many think. Just the act of opening the top will cause air to mix with...

    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

I don't brew lagers so I can't comment from experience. But I have seen folks talk about lager yeast needing more "contact" with the wort. Not sure I buy that but please refer back to the first sentence... ;) :mug:

    Grainfather!!

The possible advantage of a 20a ckt over a 15a ckt is larger wire size and slightly less voltage drop over the length of the ckt (a little more juice for your heating element). For 15a ckt, it is permissible to run either 14ga or 12ga wire. For 20a ckt, they have to ran 12ga. Check your wire...

    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

The longer you wait to open the valve, the more chance the trub has to compact in the bottom of the conical and create a clog so it won't drop into the CB. Once the yeast becomes active, it's either in suspension or floating on top. My first few batches in the FF, I used to open the valve...

    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

I start with the valve closed. After pitching my yeast, I wait 12-24 hours until activity starts then open the valve for the remainder. Obviously you have to close the valve for intermediate CB change(s) but it's immediately re-opened after the swap. About 1-2 seconds for each CO2 shot. I'm...

    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

There is someone not on the internet?!? That is surprising... ;) Sounds like you guys made out well for Christmas! I've put approximately 15 or so batches through the FF. Below are my methods/experiences. When draining from the BK into the FF, I use a large funnel with a mesh bag placed...

    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

Probably just need to raise the temp to the top of the range for the yeast strain you're using.
  20. jbb3

    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

Exactly what I do. I use a large funnel and place a sanitized fine mesh bag in the funnel when I drain wort from the BK into the FF. I will do my first collection ball dump right after primary (5-7 days). Then if needed, another dump after another 3-5 days (but not always needed). Most of the...
