    Plastic Big Mouth Bubbler Cracked

I wouldn't be too concerned. It is the only issue I've had with them. And no one else has posted a similar problem. And the rep said he's never heard of this either. Plus they will give you a 1 year warranty. To me, it's worth it not having to lug around and clean the glass carboys.

    Plastic Big Mouth Bubbler Cracked

I contacted Norther Brewer. The rep said that they offer 1 year warranties and they are sending a new one out today. He said I'm the first with this issue that he has dealt with. I guess it was just a production flaw?

    Plastic Big Mouth Bubbler Cracked

I think as long as it's not a prolonged exposure Star San should be safe to use on plastic. But I could be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time. The thickness of the plastic worried me from the day I got it, but they've all done well. Maybe it was just a fluke? NB has been very good to me...

    Plastic Big Mouth Bubbler Cracked

I've stashed my glass carboys up in the attic and have only used the plastic BMBs from Northern Brewer for my last two brews. They are so much lighter and easier to handle. Cleaning them is easier too (in spite of the silly textured water drop designs on the side) because of the bigger opening...

    Second Brew Going Better

This was my second brew: Dead Ringer IPA extract kit from Norther Brewer. Estimated OG 1.064. Just wanted to post how it went, compare and contrast it with some of the things I did with my first brew, and get any thoughts you might have. The first major difference was I tried keeping notes...

    Yeast question

Northern Brewer is who I am using as well. I have just received my Dead Ringer IPA extract kit and will be starting it soon. I'll agree with you on their customer service. I originally ordered the Deluxe Starter Kit. Then placed a second order for various items instead of picking up everything...

    Yeast question

I know! I've only made one batch, and it probably won't even turn out good because of my out of control fermentation temperatures. It really would have paid off to research more on here beforehand. But it has pretty much taken over my mind. I have a very addictive personality. All I do is browse...

    Yeast question

I'm not sure what I was thinking of. I was playing around with some online calculators yesterday. Must have been for calculating something else. Thanks anyway everyone!

    Yeast question

If you order an extract kit and it doesn't give you an estimated FG, how do you calculate how much yeast to pitch?

    I'm Going 'BANANAS'!!

I took a reading in distilled water this morning before leaving for work: 1.000 I never thought to check if it is calibrated for 60F or 70F. Again, still learning. I just assumed it was 60F since that's the standard temperature for specific gravity readings. I googled a gravity converter...

    I'm Going 'BANANAS'!!

OK. Northern Brewer estimated a FG of 1.011. 3 days after pitching, gravity was 1.008. Today, 7 days after pitching, gravity was 1.003. The sample didn't taste as strong of bananas as the scent would lead you to believe. It was pretty good. A little warmth in your throat when you drink it but...

    I'm Going 'BANANAS'!!

I took a gravity reading a few days ago. Got 1.008. Best guess northern brewer gave me when I emailed them was a FG of 1.011. What does it mean that I was already below the manufacturer's FG in 3 days? What would you suggest I do if I planned on kegging? I'm taking another reading now.

    I'm Going 'BANANAS'!!

The proof is in the air! You know, it's actually quite pleasant in the house. Maybe I've stumbled onto something... I will be controlling my ferm temps in the future. In the meantime I will leave this guy in primary for 3 more weeks. If it cleans up, great. If not, I'm drinking it anyway...

    I'm Going 'BANANAS'!!

Haha thanks! He brews IIPAs pretty much exclusively. I've had them, and they are quite tasty. But I'm assuming that a beer with so much hops can help mask mistakes like what I'm dealing with. But, I figured he knows better than me, so I blindly followed along. Not a big deal, like I said, it...

    I'm Going 'BANANAS'!!

I haven't given up, that's why I'm asking for suggestions. I'm gonna drink it regardless! But I will definitely be controlling my fermentation temps next time.

    I'm Going 'BANANAS'!!

Negative ghost rider. It's an Irish Red Ale. It was my first batch and I had a friend help me who has been extract brewing for years. And I definitely messed up. Optimum temps for the yeast was 57-70F. I had crazy action within 8 hours of pitching the yeast. He told me to wrap the fermenter in a...

    I'm Going 'BANANAS'!!

My first ever batch has been in primary for 1 week. After some research and helpful information from everyone here on my previous post, I'm afraid you were ALL right: my first batch is going to have some nasty off flavors due to my high fermentation temps. My living room smells like a bunch of...

    First Brew Questions

I had my loving wife take the coat off the fermenter while I was at work. The temperature had come down to 72 degrees F. I just got home and took a gravity reading. The sample showed 71 degrees F with the digital thermopen and it came to 1.008. I used an online converter that I googled. At that...

    First Brew Questions

WOW! Ok. We pitched the yeast at 78 degrees F as the recipe called for. Wouldn't I be better off to cool it further? To 70 degrees or so before pitching?

    First Brew Questions

I purchased How To Brew a couple weeks ago and have been reading through it and browsing forums for a while. But I was still unsure of myself. I also didn't want to come across as "the guy that knows everything because he reads the forums." He was kind enough to offer to help me so I accepted...
