    First day brewing : disaster

You would be surprised at how hard it is to actually infect a batch. I've done just about everything you can to a beer short of spiting in it, and have yet to have a problem.

    Looking for a malty recipe

I made an amazing old ale a while ago. IIRC... 10lb 2 row .75lb 60 caramel .75lb 80 caramel .5 lb 120 caramel 1lb dark brown sugar end of boil. 2oz Northern Brewer 60 min English ale yeast of your choice (used Wyeast 1450-PC Denny's Favorite 50) After two months of aging, it is...

Is my LHBS completely crazy (Arrogant Bastard recipe)???

If you decide to make the beer (why not, you already have it) soak the grains in a sock with about 5 L of water at about 160 degrees. Allow to soak for about an hour (this will be your mini mash). remove the sock and allow to drain. Wash with the remaining water you want to boil. Boil with half...

Extremely low final gravity. How can I bring it up?

On a side note, is .9 even theoretically possible? What is the gravity of pure ethanol?

How much better is all grain Vs. Extract brewing??

A well made extract beer will always be better than a poorly made all grain beer. However, in the right hands, all grain can be better than extract. So, it's not so much the technique, it's the brewer who determines how good the beer will be.

Why aren't American Ambers more popular?

I believe A bastard is too high in gravity to be called an amber. I believe it falls into the American strong ale category.

Ohio University Homebrew Festival Shut Down

If you have any decent microbreweries around, you should talk to them and see if they would allow you to brew on a pilot system or something. Then you can charge all you want. Thats what our brewing science class at Colorado State does.

    What grains can I SMaSH?

I can't imagine it would. I would like to try rye. I imagine it would be very, very spicy.

6 Year old takes off in family UFO

Instead of being known for our breweries, we will now be known for the whack job and his balloon boy. Oh well.

    What grains can I SMaSH?

Has anyone done an all wheat or all rye mash. How about an oat smash?

AG, sauteed hop pale ale - 20 min. boil, no sparge

I think a potential problem you might run into is longer term storage of the beer. I would imagine the fat would eventually go rancid if you age the beer for more than a few months.

My first Recipe - Super Simple Pale Ale

Like other said, go with 1/2 to 1 Lb of the crystal. Use a darker version to get the color what you want. What hop schedule do you plan on using?

    Injuries sustained while brewing

I haven't hurt myself yet, other than getting undiluted sanstar in a cut (yes, it hurts). but I have melted the wiring under my electric stove. Lesson learned, do not boil 6 gallons on your electric range without a canning element.

    recipe for Wyeast 9097

First off, thank you very much to Brewmasters Warehouse for including the past date Wyeast 9097 Old ale blend that I ordered and replacing it with another yeast. But now, I need to find something good to use it for. First question, anybody use this yeast? How did it turn out? Second, I put...

Stained stovetop, do smooth surfaces do that?

There isn't anything to read. You just need to find a good turkey fryer and a propane tank. Although you may also need a bigger brewpot also. My advice is to ask around on craigslist. I found mine for 30 bucks, never been used.

will boiling starter wort directly in Erlenmeyer flask sanitize the flask?

I don't think boiling in the flask is an issue. But I'm not sure about moving a flask with boiling wort into an ice bath. It just seems like the extreme temperature change might shatter the flask.

Brewing the Hangover out of the Beer...

Most of the hangover is caused by the alcohol. It's the metabolism of the alcohol and the dehydrating affects that contribute almost all of the symptoms you encounter. The dehydration is easy to explain, while the metabolism is harder. Acetaldehyde is an intermediate step in the metabolism of...
