    New to home brew

Keep in mind there is often not just one way of doing something. Some people use hop bags, some don't. Some cold crash, some don't. Some use secondaries....you get the idea. Personally I don't know why you wouldn't use a hop bag - why have to worry about getting the hops to drop out when...

    Bottling/keeping and cold crashing

I'm drinking an AG Blonde Ale as I type this. I did primary for 2 weeks at 64-66F, 1 week secondary at 68F, 4 days cold crash at 40F, and then kegged. Force carbed at 35PSI for three days, shaking the keg twice a day for a minute each. Was ready to drink on day four in the keg. Lowered my...

    a little advice please

I wouldn't steep at 170, I recommend something a bit lower like 160-168. 20 to 30 minutes, then boil for 15-20. Whatever amount of liquid you have you would then add to the rest of the kit, and subtract that amount from the original recipe. Read How to brew, though. It's free and online, too.

New To Home Brewing - Thoughts before I buy

Looks like you are pretty set with that list made for you. For a blow off I use some tubing I got from NB and stuck it on the middle part of a three piece airlock and cut the plastic '+' off the bottom. Works flawless and only cost a few dollars. I think the tube is a 1" or 1/2" ID tube but...

New To Home Brewing - Thoughts before I buy

I live very close to the St. Paul Northern Brewer - their starter kit is nice but IMO a little overpriced. I would HIGHLY recommend waiting for a sale - they often throw in free kits, parts and sometimes even a free burner when you buy that deluxe starter kit. Go hydrometer - far cheaper. I...

How cold is too cold to brew outside?

I brewed my first all grain last weekend late night. It was 5F outside, brewed in my non-heated garage. Wrapped up my mash tun in a sleeping bag and only lost 2ish degrees over the 60 minute mash rest. boil, didn't even notice a difference. I'm unable to cool outside due to using an...

    Adding Corn Sugar

Just thought I'd throw in that I Often throw in a 5oz package of corn sugar in my brews, as I lie the little kick of alchohol it provides. I haven't noticed any real change in flavor done it for IPAs, pale ales, cream ale, etc.

    Super Agata - problems

I had the same problem with mine, even after bolting down (I thought that would be the fix). What I found after spending a night capping empties and going through a bag of caps, is that I was trying to hard to counter the effect. I was either pushing really hard down w/ the handle, or grabbing...

Never again dry-hopping without hop sock!

Why not just throw the hops in a muslin bag, tie fishing line around the top, and weigh it down a bit? No gunk in your beer to have to worry about.

Turkey fryer or stainless steel pot

This is what I use to brew: http://www.menards.com/main/spring-fever/grills-smokers/30-quart-aluminum-turkey-fryer/p-1929564-c-10141.htm Cost is cheap, and I have had no issues with it at all. I do full 5 gallon boils in it, you have to be careful at the beginning for boilovers, but it's...
