Fire Brew on a Spike 20 Complete System

Jealous man. One day I'll have one of these lol Spikes does mention a ~4 degree temp drop due to heat loss through the HLT and line loss so you setting 152 to get your 148 is spot on.

    Low efficiency with Grainfather

My efficiencies have been great now that I've got my water calcs spot on. Missed my numbers plenty of times as I was figuring out the system, but been great since I've gotten used to it.

Grain Bill on High ABV with BIAB

Wasn't sure on how to even search this, but my future plans started me thinking.. Since grain bill plays into gravity and your overall ABV at the end of a brew, using BIAB what would happen if your grain bill is so large that there is more wort after the mash than you need for boil volume...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I brewed a dry Irish Stout Saturday. OG was spot on. Finally dialed in my equipment settings on beersmith and on its way to being a great Stout. I used WYeast Irish Ale Yeast 1084 with a Liter starter. Saw first sign of activity a couple hours in. Looking forward to this one.

    Multibrew brew days

I did a double brew, brew day once. It was with a mash and boil so no parallel activities possible. It was the first and last time I do multiple without multiple systems or a pilot where I can prep another mash while I'm boiling. I was so tired after 10 plus hours of getting both done that...

    Spike's upcoming eBIAB system

I've been messaging back and forth as well with them. I think they want to release a lot of data on their own terms. Nothing wrong with that, but I want to know damnit lol.. I was asking price point and some design details, but they said similar in response. I have a feeling they are farther...

    Grain Father users

What is Gwane Fadda? lol j/k Been using the GF for 3 brews so far. Upgrade from the Mash and Boil and its such a nicer system. I haven't used any recipes as I look on Brew Guru and Beersmith for different ideas.

What was your biggest mess up when doing a homebrew??

I at one point had 2 pumps, one with an inline switch and the other without. So forgetting which pump I was using, I plugged in the one that didn't have a switch and since I didn't close the valve, but did hook it up to my mash tun I had wort flying all over the place. My other instance was at...

    Spike's upcoming eBIAB system

Curious too. How does the basket suspend? I'm sure Spike is working that into the design so looking forward to seeing. I doubt a pully system would be easy to manage with the handles on the side instead of a bucket handle.

    Introducing… the Spike FLEX!

I have a CF5 and Flex +. They each have their benefit. I use the Flex + when I'm not dry hopping or flavoring during secondary. Has less fitting locations so less cleaning and easy use. Smaller footprint is a plus as well. When I'm going to secondary in order to dry hop or add puree etc, I...

    AHA Membership. Why/Why Not?

I joined a few months ago. There are not a lot of deals near me, but in Baltimore there are a ton of bars/restaurants that have deals. My LHBS doesn't have a discount either. I do like readying zymurgy and being able to go to Homebrewcon. Plus always good having an org go to bat for you if a...

    Grainfather!!

I always leave it just above the grain, based on where the top grate is. One time I had it on the grain and it compacted, causing a stuck mash. I have mixed feelings about that top perforated grate. The only reason I even see the need for it is to keep the silicone line from burying itself in...

    Grainfather!!

Figured as much. The IPA was a weird one. Grain bed had a lot less resistance so was running the pump more open.

    Grainfather!!

Here's a random question with the GF. Do you guys throttle the pump back on the mash (not opening the valve to 100%)? Just curious how you are all running it since in the GF's case it has the overflow dump. I typically throttle back so not too much is going down the overflow or backing it...

when to take off stir plate

I am newer to them as well, but I've been using the canned wort. 1 can of it, refill can with water, pitch yeast and let the stir plate spin for about 24 hours. I turn off the stir plate when I'm ready to pitch into my wort. To date, have not had any issues with that way. It also doesn't...

    Moving brewery to garage

I brew in the garage and ferment. Using spikes and their temp control I have zero issue maintaining ferm temps. In the winter, I leave the door to the house open to get a bit warmer while I'm in there and summer use a fan to circulate air. Garage is insulated so it isn't bad regardless...

    Milkshake IPA base?

I used about 3 oz of puree in secondary. extract at kegging. The extract was fairly strong. Ended up using about 5 oz of puree and it balanc well.

    Milkshake IPA base?

I used 2.5 oz of extract at kegging in my Pineapple Milkshake. Took all pineapple out of the beer so had to add more puree to balance it out. Got it squared away ,but next time I'll only use about a half oz if I use extract

    Grainfather!!

I typically put the chiller on a corny keg. Perfect height.
