    Beer Joke:

Q: Why does Belgium give the world such great beers? A: To try and make up for also giving us those annoying little blue bastards! * *(for those of you who don't know, the Smurfs are also Belgian) :D

    Edgeumicate Me About Hops...

I usually don't rule anything out, without trying it - I might miss something. As an analogy, I don't like country music, but won't pass up listening to something just because it may have some elements of country in it. In this way, I have discovered several artists that, for some reason or...

    Show us your Kegerator

Just the standard black Haier two tap kegerator - nothing as righteous as some of yours.... ....BUT none of you have a bitchin' set of tap handles like these: :D They're old-school bike shifter replicas (Goes with the screenname and the "theme" of my basement bar; "The HandleBAR"). (Get it...

    First All Grain Batch

Ah, got it. (I just started playing with Beersmith yesterday - I figured there'd be a way to get that number out of it).

    Edgeumicate Me About Hops...

True. I'm not apologizing or trying to justify my tastes, but I'm always exploring what I like and why and always looking for new. Hate to think I'm missing out!

Lazy-ass way to clean kegerator lines....

My keg of Belgian Strong just breathed it's last. :( It's the first keg through the new kegerator, and I was thinking about cleaning the corny, then putting some cleaning solution in it and feeding it through the line and tap under pressure. Good idea? Stupid idea? Better way?

    Nitrogen - anyone using it?

Got the brain fart to maybe try putting my Belgian Quad on nitrogen when the time comes. Anyone try anything similarly idiotic? Good? Bad? Indifferent? I have the tank from my old cobra tap system (currently full of CO2) and the smaller (empty) tank that came with my new kegerator, so I...

    First All Grain Batch

On the verge of doing my first AG, and after reading this, a question occurred to me - If, after sparging, my OG is too low, can I add some extract to the boil to make up the difference? I don't see why not, but how would you calculate how much DME to add?

    Edgeumicate Me About Hops...

I would think after over ten years of trying a crap-ton of craft beers, I would have acquired it by now! ;) I'm always willing to explore - which is what this post is all about - but I find that in beers as well as food, I prefer complexity and balance. I've found with the majority of...

    Edgeumicate Me About Hops...

No, actually, the "recipe" is from a Northern Brewer kit. I bought the first one as a "starting point" for a house beer and have been tweaking it each batch. That's part of the reason for this post - I'm trying to figure out what I like/don't like, hop-wise, so I can play with that in future...

    Edgeumicate Me About Hops...

Of course they are.....that's why I planted Cascade, Willamette, Chinook and Nugget....:p I'm just trying to get a better handle on exactly what it is I like and don't like. Banjoman - my "house" beer is a Belgian Strong Golden. I'm currently using 2oz of Saaz in beginning of the boil and...

What is the Weirdest thing you have ever brewed?

I haven't brewed anything bizarre, but the weirdest thing I drank was "chili" beer. There was an actual chili pepper in the bottle. The "heat" was fun, but the vegetal aspect from the pepper was NASTY.

What is the Weirdest thing you have ever brewed?

They actually market KITS to do that, now! It's being sold locally in convenience stores - my buddy is a manager at one and I gave him a ration of -poop- about selling "prison wine" kits. :D (If they weren't ten bucks a copy, I'd buy one and try it, just for the halibut).

    Edgeumicate Me About Hops...

To me, it's like hot sauce - I like heat, to a point, but after a while, heat just obliterates everything else, so what's the point? Same with hops - there seems to sometimes be an almost one-upmanship mentality to it - "How hoppy can you take it?" Maybe the higher ABV of DFH90 balances the...

    Edgeumicate Me About Hops...

Being new here, I can stir up a hornet's nest with impunity and then claim it was because I was a n00b and didn't know better.....right? :p Here: I don't like IPA's or any really hoppy beers. Beer is water, malt and yeast. Anything else is in there for balance and/or interest.<ducks and...

First AG Batch...and my mash tun is too small...

Ok......now I'm torn between splitting the batch and just saying t'hell with it and putting in whatever mash water I can.... If I split the batch, what do I do with the runoff from the first mash, while I'm mashing the second? Keep it in my brew kettle with the lid on? Should I attempt to keep...

First AG Batch...and my mash tun is too small...

Five gallons. I've seen the mash water calculated as either 1.5 or one quart(s) per pound of grain. For 14.25 lbs of grain, even at 1:1, that works out to 3.5625 gallons of mash water. Now that will fit in a five gallon cooler, but not with 14 lbs of grain ALSO in there. At 1.5:1, it's over...

First AG Batch...and my mash tun is too small...

For my first AG, I picked a Belgian Quad.....and, after buying the ingredients and starting the yeast I did the calculations.... 14.25 Lbs of grain @ 1.5: 1 = 5.34375 gallons. That all ain't gonna fit in a Rubbermaid cooler... Even at 1:1, that's still 3.5625 gallons. What do I do? Can I do...

    Corny or carboy?

I will soon have a "terrible" problem - more beer than storage vessels. Right now, I have a Belgian Strong Golden in secondary, and it'll be there at least until Thanksgiving. I have a Belgian Quad to brew this weekend and my primary (bucket) is free. After that, however, I'll need another...
