Damn you - got there ahead of me! :D

Cost of "good" beer, versus "swill".

Wow, this thread has taken an interesting turn.... I don't for a minute blame the big brewers for what constitutes the bulk of what is sold as "beer" today. They are only giving the market what they want - and given the amount sold, I'd say they've nailed the target. My initial flippancy...

    ...I did it all wrong...

Epilogue: It came out awesome! Best beer I've ever brewed! :D Even got rave reviews at a party from a guy who normally doesn't like my beers. Problem is, I'll never be able to duplicate it!

Cost of "good" beer, versus "swill".

Just made a Quad and used 14lbs of grain to make five gallons. Given all the corn, rice and filler they use, (and SUBSTANTIALLY lower ABV....) how many gallons of sludgeweiser could I have made from that same 14 lbs of grain?

    Propane exchanges are for newbs.

This alone was enough to convince me to start refilling instead of taking the lazy way out. EVERY %^%#$ TIME I went to (b)Lowe's to exchange, the ball got dropped between the mutant at the register and whoever was supposed to come outside. I'd stand around for ten minutes, get pissed and then...

    What Are You Brewing Today?

Nothing....unless you're referring to the bean soup in my digestive tract....

    ...I did it all wrong...

Oh....and because I made a slightly bigger batch in my five gallon fermenter, I now have hops on my bathroom ceiling, and a big mess in my shower...:D
  9. T

    ...I did it all wrong...

It didn't help. Plus I now have some grain debris in my fermenter.... Dunno....I'm seeing activity in the airlock, so I must not have managed to kill them all...:D Yeah, I "screwed up" a framboise a few years ago that came out pretty damned good. I also made a ginger beer where the ginger...

    ...I did it all wrong...

My "brewery" is cycling-themed - (Never would have guessed with that screenname, huh?)- so my beers have cycling related names. This one will be called "Jacky Durand Belgian Quad". Jacky was known for just saying "screw it" and going for it. He often took what others thought were stupid...

    How long in the primary?

I've always been under the impression that it's a good idea to get the wort off the dead yeast fairly quickly. As such, I've always racked over to the secondary after about ten days - two weeks. The recipe I just brewed says "21 days in the primary and seven in the secondary". Can that be a...

    ...I did it all wrong...

Chose a recipe that was a bit ambitious for a first all grain - a Belgian Quad. Bought the grains about a month ago and had them crushed, intending to brew that weekend - it didn't happen until this weekend, so they've been sitting around, crushed, for four or five weeks. Thought my mash tun...

    New Hop Trellis (in action!!!)

Really? Mine didn't work for crap - too flexible. I made "Tees" and they bowed under the weight of the bines. I used 1 1/2.

    Nitrogen - anyone using it?

Oh sure, rain on my parade! :p

    Canned Jalapenos for Pepper Beer?

Hurt the beer? No- but remember the canning process COOKS the pepper. Are you sure you want COOKED pepper in your beer? It's entirely possible I'm wrong (although that would be a first....) but that doesn't sound appetizing to me at all.

LHBS brought down the hammer of noobishness

Wow, that's just plain rude. Being the hothead that I am, I would order a bunch of stuff online, then take it back there and show them the business they lost and then tell them to go piss up a rope. There is ONE homebrew shop near me - guy runs it out of his house. Super nice guy, but his shop...

    Canned Jalapenos for Pepper Beer?

I dunno - I had some of this a few years ago, and while the "heat" in the beer was kinda' fun, the vegetal taste from the pepper was NASTY. Of course, it WAS on the sale rack at the brew store, so maybe it was just too old. If I was going to brew a chili beer, I'd put the peppers in the...
