Are you saying that you primed with approximately 10.5 oz. (302 g) of sugar? If you did I hope you used sturdy bottles as that is more than twice the recommended amount for five gallons.

I have made three batches, all have been similar to Hornsbys Crisp Apple Hard Cider, but a little drier and I think a more sour taste. I have been using the cheapest juice I can find which might make a difference.

How did you add the priming sugar? Did you prime each individual bottle, or the whole gallon of Apfelwein? How sure are you that the priming sugar was evenly mixed into suspension? The recommended amount of priming sugar is ¾ cup or 5 oz. per 5 gallons, you used double the amount needed...

I purchase some Grolsch at the liquor store at the end of July. I threw it in the refrigerator (bought it cold), popped one open at monthly intervals and after the third month noticed a loss of pressure. There was consistently less pressure each month after that. Since the Grolsch style...

Edwort does not cold crash or rack off the lees. It is my understanding that cold crashing requires temperatures under 40 degrees F. and can take a week or longer. When you take a hydrometer reading do you degas your sample? If I remember correctly Edwort kegs after 4 - 6 weeks. As...

Sorry no Cliff notes, but Edwort's first post covers the essentials. To quote Edwort, “If you want to bottle and carbonate, ¾ cup of corn sugar will work fine. Use as you would carbonate a batch of beer.” “ After at least 4 weeks, you can keg or bottle, but it is ok to leave...

The malic acid should be fine, I have read all 610 pages of this thread and no one has complained about an acid problems that I can recall. This includes both those who dissolved their sugar in water and added it to their juice and those who added cans of concentrate to their juice for more...

Ed says to prime just like beer. After reading all 605 pages, I do not recall any warnings about conditioning at higher temperatures. As far as how it tastes, mine is still aging, 4.5 months, yes I need to get it bottled.

I do not know how well the Growlers hold pressure. I do have several bottles of Grolsch in the refrigerator that are 4.5 months old, testing for the long term. The “Pop” on opening started getting quieter at around 8 weeks and has continued to get quieter as time goes on...

Those were the types I was thinking about. As far as glass being better than the Better Bottles, well glass can shatter and adds significant weight, plastic can be easily scratched if you are not careful cleaning the insides. Thousands of people use glass carboys safely every year, it...

I would recommend buying a brew kit with upgrades, as an example, Midwest Supplies will add a 5 gallon Better Bottle with bung and airlock for $20, or $30 for a glass carboy. http://www.midwestsupplies.com/products/ProdBySubCat.aspx?SubCat=11166&fd=1 I pieced together my setup and it has...

I plan on splitting this batch, half carbonated and half still. I will sweeten half of both styles, so four different styles to taste test. Will bottle on 10/20, 8 weeks in primary, planning on letting it condition until New Years Eve. Sorry I have been reading the other sections of...

A search returned this, I have not tried this yet, my first batch is only 5 weeks old, but I plan on sweetening about half the batch when I bottle. Post no. 3888 "I just made my first 5 gallons over the summer. The sample after 2 months in the carboy was quite dry for my likeing, but...

Mixed up a five gallon batch of EdWorts Apfelwein for my first ferment. Unfortunately I have more time than money, so this will give me at least six weeks to round up the rest of the equipment I need to get started.

It actually took me thirteen days. Yes I know I need a new hobby, that is why I wanted to start fermenting. Thanks for the welcome.

I just finished reading all of this thread, I think it answered any questions I might have had perfectly. I started a batch on 8/25/09 at 8:00 pm. it is fermenting like crazy. I followed EdWorts recipe with the addittion of yeast nutrient. This will be my first try at fermenting, the funny...
