Larger volume in primary to prevent racking loss?

No argument, but the pickle buckets from jimmy johns here are only 5 gallons. So it might not be the same every where. I was just pointing out that if yours has 5 gallon buckets, then there are other free 5 gallon buckets which may be better. Opps! I just realized I was talking about...

Larger volume in primary to prevent racking loss?

be careful with those, or your wine will come out smelling like pickles. The pickle buckets are only 5 gallons and you can get better ones for free. A better option is icing buckets from grocery store bakeries, but those are 4 & 5 gallons not 6.

    Cranberry apple wine alcohol percentage

Where can I find a list of sugar content of various fruit online? Is there a free service that can help me calculate a rough OG my self? I'll get a hydrometer this weekend, but it would help to build recipes, before I start putting it together. Thanks

No need to wash the yeast. Just Prepare the lemon must ahead of time,24-48 hours, to let the preservatives evaporate. Then siphon off the apfelwein (or any other wine) and pour the skeeter pee must directly onto the apfelwein yeast cake.

Serving Tanks and Fermenters at a Brewpub

Not specifically related to your question, but an idea for your business plan: Make a batch for one month only and have a first tap night/party with live music (if allowed). You can bring back favorites the same time every year or if it is popular enough you can add it to your regular...

    Cranberry apple wine alcohol percentage

For those that have never had cranberry pie and want to give it a shot, add a little cornstarch to the leftover cranberry relish. Then put it in a pie crust, homemade or store bought and bake at 350 for 15 minutes. Yum!

    Cranberry apple wine alcohol percentage

So I'm making some cranberry apple wine, but I don't have a hydrometer and wanted a guess on how potent it will be. First make some cranberry relish: 1 lb fresh cranberries 2 medium oranges 2 apples 2 cups sugar put it all into the blender and blend it up good. If you want to eat...

Larger volume in primary to prevent racking loss?

Glass marbles can be sterilized and placed into the carboy to top it up, or you can start a bigger batch and then go to a smaller secondary. Personally I don't know anyone besides toy shops that sell glass marbles, and few of them do anymore.

Which bottles are best and old grolsch bottle surprise

Don't buy bottles. Go around on trash day and look in the recycling bin you'll get all you want/need in no time. If this does not appeal to you then you can make friends with a restaurant/bar owner (or bartender). Just ask them to save a night's bottles for you. This should be enough for a...

    Hop rhyzomes after first year??

It will be easier to transplant successfully and you'll have more to transplant if you wait 2 years before dividing. That said if you feel you need/want to divide this year, go ahead.

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Early in this thread someone tried in the low 60's and it took their apfelwein 10-12 weeks to clear. At that point people were bottling/kegging after 1 month, when it cleared. Now it sounds like everyone is leaving it in their primary for that long anyway.

Milling Small Grains (Quinoa, Millet, Amaranth)

Maybe you could try using a mortar and pestle, a coffee grinder might be another option.

Another one bites the dust. This was too cheep and easy to make to pass up, so I started my first brew tonight. I'll add my total to the other thread.
