Noob brewer- first time apfelwein + skeeter pee

Go ahead and start 3 more batches of apfelwein drinking 4 a night will only give you 11 nights enjoyment. You can drink one young like you are now and the other 2 will get a little age on them. Then start skeeter pee on those 3 yeast cakes, and it will give you more to drink while you let the...

    Noob question for concentrate wine

Do the carbonation bubbles affect readings? I was making a skeeter pee that went from a 1060 to a 1066 to a 1070 on consecutive days at 68 degrees, starting 3 days after pitching. I could taste the slight alcohol taste so I know it is working... I just ignored it and let it keep working. In...

    adding coffee grounds to hops

If you make yogurt or cheese the whey can be used as a liquid fertilizer. Coffee grounds are good as a soil amendment, but you can over do it. Too much nitrogen can lead to lots of leaves and not much "fruit".

    Full sun or partial

Don't plant it in full sun. YOu might try planting it on the east side of your house. It will get 4-6 hours of direct sun before it gets too hot. If you don't have east exposure then go for south east or north east or even somewhere with partial shade during the day/afternoon. second to last...

Looking for anyone growing less common/unique/"old" hop varieties

It would not be a named variety but if your just looking for something different/unique then you might try growing from seed. I'm getting some from a heirloom grower next month, but it has no name that I know of.

    food grade fermenation bucket?

Unless it said it is food grade then it is not. Most Lowes cary food grade buckets, they are not with the grey outdoor buckets. They only have the 5 gallon size in white. Another option is a trip to the grocery store bakery and ask for empty icing buckets. You can get them in 1-2-3-4 and 5...

    Apple brandy question

To my knowledge distilling AND jacking are illegal in the US. Jacking leaves all of the fusel alcohols that are harmful in the liquor that can be mostly separated out by distilling.

What kind of wild fruits have you fermented?

Yes there are poisonous trees and shrubs, always be sure of why your picking before you use it. So far I have only used mulberry, but I just started too. Lots of wild edibles to be used.

    a wine salad ...

I did, the worst that can happen is it won't taste good, but often the fridge/freezer clean out wines can be good to great. Since you have the fruit it doesn't cost much and won't take much time to make a gallon batch. Go for it.

A better way to back sweeten

Simple syrup, equal parts sugar and water that is heated till the sugar melts in to the water is another option. Apple juice works too, but I haven't tried that with grape based wines.

    Sometimes, I hate Alaska!

That made me laugh. What does that include besides north pole? Sometimes you can call them and get them to ship it flat rate. I always hated paying more for shipping than the cost of the order. I miss my friends, the scenery, the food, the beer, and the fishing.

Which bottles are best and old grolsch bottle surprise

Growlers are not pressure vessels, so if you want carbonated beer then I would not suggest it. The only way to do it is carb it in a keg and then fill the growler for no more than a day or two.

    Man, I love Apfelwein

It will take at least a month to clear and maybe even more if you have lower temps, below 70.

    Did I Ruin My Beer?

You have to open them for gravity readings, and for wines to push down a cap of fruit pulp/skins. It is not something you want to do more than you have to, but it is an acceptable risk. Sanitize anything you put into the mix and don't take more time than you have to.
