A question about a clear distillate becoming very cloudy

Louche is the term. You can add high proof spirit back to it and MAYBE clear it up. It happens a lot in the GIN world when blending because of all the botanicals and oils. Very common. Cheers Jay

First distillation run complete (but with problems.) What now?

You can pretty much toss out your thermometer on a pot still. It's not complete worthless but close to it. Best to use other tools for making cuts...it won't take you many runs to figure out what to toss and what to keep. AND a big AND where they are in the extraction process. Think 3rds...

What is the thinga-magigger on the end? Do you need the end barbed or straight pipe work? Cheers Jay

For Sale 1-3 bbl homebrew system MUST GO Give an offer

Through and through this is a 1 BBL system. Am I missing something? Do you have the 2 pumps, hoses and all the connectivity that it would need for it to work? I didn't see any in the pictures. Maybe a few pictures of the gas control regulators and false bottom system as well. Are they TRI...

    Shipping homebrew

Just ship it UPS and pack the ever living hell out of it and you'll be fine! These days when you can ship Spirits legally around the world using UPS and Fed Ex. I really wouldn't worry about it. Pack it so if it breaks its contained and the only one that will be worried is the person opening...

    Whirpool with oats...

At the brewery we tried it with a few of the NEIPA's and although I feel it added downright amazing mouthfeel I didn't like the taste it added. I feel as though it layered the flavor on top of the beer instead of blended it, if that makes sense. The flavor was kinda weird as well. Personally...

Does Homebrew Hit You Harder Than Commercial Beer?

ABV IS ABV. It's all about your calculations. The math doesn't lie. But the data going in has to be accurate. Cheers Jay

AB_SO-FRICKING-LUTLY! I actually started the Shasta Society of Brewers (SSOB's) our local homebrew club about a year before I started my company that is now Nor Cal Brewing Solutions. Your LHBC will be invaluable to a new brewer. Cheers Jay

Something You Wish You’d Started Doing Sooner (in Home Brewing)

    1. Quit thinking I was going to start a brewery 2. Quit thinking every batch was some how this MAGICAL concoction that has never been done before. 3. Have more FUN with just playing with stuff in the brewery. 4. stop worrying about the numbers and just enjoy the process and the result. 5...

Inexpensive peristaltic pump for fly sparging

This is how I was taught 24+ years ago and have always done it this way. I target 1 hour. Do my math from there. If I am trying to pull 12 gallons or 120 gallons. I target the hour. I have tried many other ways i.e batch, super fast fly, super SLOOOOOW FLY ETC, and always revert back to the...

    Rum on a Reflux

Historically Rum is done on a pot still. IF you plan on doing a single pass i.e no stripping run, than yes for sure add a couple plates. I would personally not be running any more than 4 plates that's for sure but more likely only 2. All that having been said I wouldn't be doing rum on a...

    Underappreciated yeast

I totally agree. It did get a bad rap. Unfortunately it was more about the bad LME and horrible instructions that made the yeast not preform up to its potential. Its a good yeast and has much more great attributes than bad. Cheers Jay
