    Hot tap water for mashing?

I'll double check the calibration but it's a brand new ThermoWorks RT301 pocket digital thermometer... Should be good though

    Hot tap water for mashing?

Yeah it's hot as hell alright...

    Hot tap water for mashing?

See the chlorine part I think would be a problem. I've been filling my kettle from an RV hose and was about to invest in an inline charcoal filter for it, because the last Detroit water report I can get my hands on shows some in there. Of course, I haven't treated any of my other brews and...

    Hot tap water for mashing?

House was built in 2001 and has all copper piping. We replaced the hot water tank last summer so that's brand new. Not sure about the solder... I'm assuming lead free but you know what they say when you assume...

    Hot tap water for mashing?

So I just turned my kitchen faucet on hot and let it run with the thermometer underneath... Our hot water tank is up pretty high, I'm reading 170F coming out of the faucet. Is there any reason why I wouldn't just put hot water from my kitchen sink directly into my mash tun, let it cool to...

Do you Aerate your Wort ?

I agree... I see talk of o2 stones and wands and wonder if I'm missing something by just letting it fly in a long stream, out in the open like Sounds like I'm good as-is...

Do you Aerate your Wort ?

Is the goal oxygenating or aerating? I'm not specifically infusing my wort with pure oxygen but i am creating a situation where all of the liquid had an opportunity to make contact with the air and slosh around (aerate). By having the impact point of my stream be the side of the bucket, the...

Do you Aerate your Wort ?

So I've known how important aeration of wort is prior to pitching yeast... my solution was always to throw open the valve on my kettle and watch the stream of wort flow through the air and make impact on the side of my fermentation bucket... as the stream gets smaller, I just scoot the bucket...

What came in the mail for you today?

New ThermoWorks thermometer! Not a thermopen but just as accurate (just not as quick)

    Homer Bucket

Dang that's a good idea... I always fill up a spray bottle when I mix up a 5 gallon batch of Star San... Never considered saving the entire thing...

Sick as a dog today... My DIPA's fault?

Thank the beer gods it wasn't my DIPA. I want to enter it into the Michigan Homebrew Competition and could picture the headlines now...

Sick as a dog today... My DIPA's fault?

Haha yeah just one... Yeah you know the saying... Correlation does not equal causation and I've finished most of this batch off without issue. Maybe it's just a bug

Sick as a dog today... My DIPA's fault?

So I left work this morning feeling really awful... Had it coming out both ends and I'll leave any further description to your imaginations... No one else in my family felt bad today, we all ate dinner together and had the same home-cooked meal. The only real difference for me was I had one of...

Post your "whoops" moments- messes, etc

I was all set up, music playing and sun shining on a beautiful brew day outside. Water was heated and sitting in my 10 gallon cooler, nice and warm, ready to dough in on my RIS... Opened the bag of grain to begin pouring it in, and dropped about 4.5 lbs of my 24 lb grain bill all over my...

Ferm Temp Control: Upgrade MOF or Go Chest Freezer?

"Don't mind me and my buckets..." I do have two so I think I better plan for that. Thanks for the recommendation though I'm going to look into it. I wonder if anyone would want to buy my MOF chamber...

Ferm Temp Control: Upgrade MOF or Go Chest Freezer?

I'm looking on craigslist to find one... Couple 5 cu ft and a 14 cu ft. If a 7 holds 2 buckets I probably don't need the 14, and the 5 may be too small...

Ferm Temp Control: Upgrade MOF or Go Chest Freezer?

That's kind of what I'm thinking too... how big of a freezer do you have? Any modifications required?

Ferm Temp Control: Upgrade MOF or Go Chest Freezer?

So I built one of the Mother of Fermentation Chillers using the Wort-o-Matic plans (www.wortomatic.com/articles/38DD-Mother-of-a-Fermentation-Chiller) and generally have enjoyed the benefits of increased control over my fermentation temps... However I'm finding there's still some significant...

My Mother of Fermentation Chiller (and other Steel Horse Brewery upgrade)

So I built one of these bad boys and generally love it... However I'm finding there's still some significant room for improvement. My basement (where I store my chamber) is cool, about 65F. So the cooling fan really only comes into play early in the fermentation, to help counter the natural...
