    Seeking a lower FG. How?

Ok, to answer a few of the more common questions y'all have: -I live in a reasonably small town and we really only have one local shop. I buy most of my ingredients there, largely for cost purposes after shipping. I honestly don't know how fresh their stuff is. The owners of the shop have a...

    Seeking a lower FG. How?

Thanks all. I'm familiar with the use of simple sugars in this manner. As for myself, every beer that I've brewed thus far has ended up within a couple points of 1.019, but original gravities have ranged from 1.053, I think, to 1.073. Rather nonspecific as to yeast, though this last time around...

    Seeking a lower FG. How?

Link away if I failed in my search duties, but I didn't find anything on point when I tried :( Every batch that I've brewed up thus far has had a final gravity of around 1.018-1.020, fine for the recipes (it's what they called for) and all that, but when I play around in brew calculators, I...

    Third brew in the can!

Ain't that the truth! Fortunately, I still have some black IPA left. But... that's going pretty quickly, too.

    Third brew in the can!

Well, actually its in the fermenter, but that's semantics. I figure I'm good for a couple more in here before I start doing silly things in the more advanced forums, but I'm rather pleased with myself and wanted to share, if only for the benefit of other, future newcomers to this calling...

What exactly does an infection look like?

Awesome, thanks both! I didn't think that is was, but always nice to have confirmation from people who know better. Thanks for the link, as well. Now, time to go get set up...

What exactly does an infection look like?

Maybe a silly question, maybe one without an answer. But I can't seem to find anyone who has actually, you know, described one before. Here's the setup: I'm getting ready to brew up my next beer (batch #3) tomorrow. It's supposed to be a relatively large one (1.073 OG) and so I threw together...

Dry hopping -- When, and in which vessel?

Thanks all, for the advice and confirmations. Kegging is still too capital-intensive for me to start just yet, but I'll definitely keep that in mind when I get to it. In the interim, I think I'm just going toss a hop sock into my primary in a week or so. Boiled, of course! Kippis!

Dry hopping -- When, and in which vessel?

Yeah, I'm not all that hot on doing loads of gravity readings... I did them weekly with my first batch, and that was just too much work. I haven't bothered to do one with this batch yet, and probably won't until 10-14 days. Effort! I think I'll just dry hop into this carboy and buy a second one...

Dry hopping -- When, and in which vessel?

Recipe #2 calls for dry hopping on day seven, and I'm trying to decide whether I want to just dump my hops into primary, or first rack to a secondary vessel and then dry hop. Opinion on the matter seems to be all over the place, and I was wondering what thoughts you all might have on the...

Using a blowoff tube with large-mouthed vessels?

I think I have a generic Better Bottle, whose mouth at least looks to me quite a bit larger. Maybe I wasn't playing with the right size hose? Either way, I now feel a bit silly. I just assumed that they wouldn't fit, and I'd have to rig something up, and I'm not very good with rigging things...

Using a blowoff tube with large-mouthed vessels?

How does one adapt a piece of 1" blowoff tubing to fit, say, a 6 gallon carboy with a two-inch mouth? I ask because my yeast are getting REALLY feisty! I had an inch of krausen this morning at 7. Now, four hours later, I have foam bubbling up into my airlock. Bloody thing will probably pop...
  13. C38368

Well... just brewed my second batch. Might've also borked my first!

Cheers! I just took a look at my carboy this morning, about 13 hours after filling it... Lots of krausen already! Plenty of bubbling! Looks like the yeasties are happy and healthy, and I'm rather chuffed about that. (For the sake of comparison, batch #1 involved a packet of Nottingham dry...

Well... just brewed my second batch. Might've also borked my first!

Did that ;) It's in the fermenter now, so we'll see how it turns out. The only reason I really wanted to ask is because Alchemy hops aren't commercially available, and it would be a bloody shame to not get good beer from them! Well, that and the fact that I also decided to try the whole...

Well... just brewed my second batch. Might've also borked my first!

(Not my first batch, which turned out nicely. This might be the first that I wind up having to throw out.) I've got finals coming up next week, and really wanted to get my second batch going before they started, so that I could at least let it sit in primary (or secondary) until June or even...

    My first beer is DRINKABLE!

The kit was called "light ale." Real descriptive, huh? It turned out looking like an amber ale. My girlfriend was sick over the weekend, so I didn't drink any. So now it's coming up on three weeks in the bottle, and the profile has changed a lot. Malt is much more prominent now, and hops have...

    My first beer is DRINKABLE!

Thanks all :) I did drop a Whirlfloc in, as one was provided to me. I don't know how much cloudier it would've been without it. The end result was far from objectionably cloudy, just noticeable. Plenty of yeasties hanging out in the bottles, though! Probably two or three times what you might...

    My first beer is DRINKABLE!

Actually, I think someone even went so far as to call it "good." And I think that's even better than drinkable, so I'm feeling rather chuffed about that. Pretty cloudy, what with not being filtered, or even given time in secondary, but hey, that's OK by me. Because it's got alcohol in it and...

    Just bottled my first batch!

Oh, I've known that for awhile! Heck, it's impossible to live in Oregon, drink beer, and not realise that after a spell. But this is so much more fun and, in the end, affordable!

    Just bottled my first batch!

After many, many moons (well, weeks, at least) of reading and thinking and wondering and pulling triggers, I finally got beermaking kit. And then I brewed a beer. Three weeks in the fermenter, and today into bottles. I started with seven, maybe seven-and-a-half gallons in the brewpot...
