When Is Beer Supposed To Taste Like Beer (or what do hops "taste' like)?

Thanks guys, I'm beginning to believe it is just the hops that I am tasting. I say that because .5oz of Northern Brewers in Batch #2 prior to fermentation gave me the same taste as 3 additions of NB and Cascade did in Batch #1, but to a much lesser degree.

When Is Beer Supposed To Taste Like Beer (or what do hops "taste' like)?

Anchor, I usually have the stirring spoon that I used to stir in the extract with. I use that to take small samples and put them in a shot glass until they cool. After cooling and putting the wort into the primary, I will pour off enough for an OG/Temp reading and taste that. She...blue, In...

When Is Beer Supposed To Taste Like Beer (or what do hops "taste' like)?

Special Hops, Yup, done that. Tried the Northern Brewers hops prior to adding on my first batch. Perceived a bitter to grapefruity taste. This was a single hops leaf. I'm wondering if what I'm tasting is the combination of all the hops addition just before I read the OG. Brookdale, I will...

When Is Beer Supposed To Taste Like Beer (or what do hops "taste' like)?

Suthrncomfrt, I use a stainless steel pot about 3 gallons in size, glass carboys and a plastic spoon. All were sanitized with San Star. My point about non-carbonated beer was aimed more toward the question of "is pre-carbonated beer (ie flat beer) what I should expect to taste before priming...

When Is Beer Supposed To Taste Like Beer (or what do hops "taste' like)?

I know, odd question. Just after Thanksgiving I brewed a Pale Ale (see thread "A Picture Is Worth 1000 Words") All the numbers looked correct, and after racking to my secondary, a taste test revealed an odd taste I could only describe as "solvent" like. 3 weeks in the secondary and...

    Picture Worth 1000 Words

Update #2 It's now been 2 weeks in the secondary. The "globs" seem to have disappeared. The small foam islands are subsiding. A quick sample reveals a fine smell, but a God-awful aftertaste that doesn't burn, but has the nasal aroma of some kind of solvent. The beer is still a little cloudy...

    Flocs in my secondary

The advice I've seen here says that no air-lock activity doesn't mean there's no fermentation happening. I think several gravity readings that do no change means you're done. Check out the "software" section here, or Google "Beer Carbonation Calculator". You'll find stuff on the net that will...

    Flocs in my secondary

I've got the same thing happening in my secondary. Small ball shaped globs at or near the surface. Best guesses have been it is some of the trub that got sucked up during racking. After about 4 days, small foam islands began to appear indicating the yeast was still at work so instead of...

    Bottling From Primary Bucket

I went back about 6 pages in the thread and didn't see anything about this. If I decide to bottle directly from my primary fermenting bucket as some people have suggested, how is that done? If I put the priming sugar into the fermenter and stir doesn't that stir up the yeast cake too...

    Picture Worth 1000 Words

Update: The globs are still there, but don't appear to be doing anything. I have a many more islands of small bubble foam, so I assume the yeasties are doing their thing. It's one week into a projected two week conditioning and it doesn't appear that any "clearing" has happened. Does it...

    Critique - Simple Porter Recipe

I see in the Beginners Section someone is also asking about a Porter recipe. There, some folks have said to add some flaked oats to add mouth-feel. Would a couple ounces of that add anything to this recipe?

    Critique - Simple Porter Recipe

I saw a piece on the net that quoted Ray Daniel's book "Designing Great Beers". The article quotes the ratios for a porter as 55% pale malt, 11% crystal, 4% chocolate and 5% Black. I replaced the pale with the LME - Light and adjusted the grains to match the above ratios as best I could...

Sorry Guys, I didn't realize that at my current account level, I seem to have a profile gallery, but cannot make it public, or create a member's gallery in that section.

Sour H. H. Sorry, not sure what's up. If I click on my gallery then look at the one with my name on it, I see 5 photos. I think Japhroaig had it. The balls must be coagulated trub or something like that. The batch seems fine and I'll let it sit for a few weeks. Thanks again. Hello Greyhound...

Thanks guys, 3 in the Primary and 2 in the bottle it is! :) Should I use a starter on the yeast or just pitch it?

Captain Obvious, here. What about switching to a plug and blowout tube. Were you expecting this much activity?

    Picture Worth 1000 Words

There appears to be 2 different things at or on the surface. Some are small islands of foam, much like the start of a krausen. The closer I look at them, the less I worry about them. The other things look like small smooth balls about the size of a BB or smaller. They hang out just under the...
