    Soliciting Igloo Cooler Thoughts

If you already have the 5gal round cooler I would recommend getting a 10gal round cooler to complement your system. I costs a little more but it is worth it in my book. I now use my 5gal cooler as my Sparge reservoir when I use the 10 gal cooler for my MLT. It works great and even if a lose...

    Questions about when to bottle

Longer fermentation periods are always helpful, especially for higher gravity beers. Most of my batches (AG) go for 2 weeks in the primary and then 1-2 weeks more in my secondary. The longer times allow more conditioning before I bottle and give the yeast plenty of time to do their job. An added...

    WLP 051 California V Ale ???

Weird, I am useing their California yeast right now in my IPA and there is no smell. It's in the pantry, so my SO would surely say something if it did smell bad.

    Aging a homebrew

I would do a IPA for longeviety reasons. IPA's came about to keep beer for the long voyages across the alantic in the old sailing days. Hops are a natural preservative and bacterialcide. So hop in the boil and dry hop your beer heavily, it will easily keep infections away. Instead of an...

Brewtarget 1.2.2 - Free Open Source Brewing Software

Thanks rocketman and brett. I had already put 3.5L in for color and had guessed at 75%, so not to far off from the 78.9%. But I am happier knowing for sure. I had assumed that I needed a moisture %, DP # and protein % number too. But after looking at other fermentables, I guess the other...

    Cranes End Wee Heavy

Have you started to drink your wee-heavy yet? I am curious how it came out after a little bottle conditioning since you do not give any info on taste. Also, what was your target mash temp? I am playing around with recipes right now in brewtarget and I plan on doing a scottish ale as my next...

Brewtarget 1.2.2 - Free Open Source Brewing Software

First of all, thanks rocketman for the program. I have been playing around with it and so far so good. My question is, I am trying to do a recipe with Maris Otter grains and since it is not in the database, do you, or anyone else, have the particulars of this grain to add in the fermentables...

    comments on blackberry stout

A little late to the discussion, but I did a blackberry porter a number of years ago that came out great. Just a hint of blackberry flavor so it was not over powering. I just added 2 pints of blackberries to the the last 5 minutes of the boil and did not strain them off. I do not believe I...

    Question about dry hopping

If it is cold out there in PA, try sticking the carboy outside the night before you keg it. The cold will drop stuff to the bottom of the carboy to give you a clearer beer. Just do not do it on a -20 below night or you may freeze it!

    First A-G abortion...

Weird, I have a plastic false bottom I got eons ago and it works great. I brewed yesterday with it and when I started drawing off my wort, it was clear and clean from the get go with absolutely no fines in the wort. I was thinking of upgrading to a stainless false bottom but if it isn’t broke, I...

    Coffee-ing a PM Porter...

All the coffee porters I have tasted were overpowered by the coffee flavor. Pretty much alcolholic coffee drinks rather then a porter with coffee undertones. So I am going a different route to make a coffee porter tomorrow. I am just adding 1/2 lb of Franco-Belges kiln coffee malt to my grain...

    sparging poll

I have always fly sparged, but to be fair I bought my sparge equipment a long time ago and only found out about batch sparging through this forum. I am brewing a porter tomorrow, and I plan on fly sparging just from habit.
