1 hour boil - When do I time?

Once you have the break down and add your hops, then start the timer. The real reason for timing the boil it to get utilization correct, anyway.

    High Temp. Tubing

I use Silicon tubing for the high temps. It is about $2.25/ft. but you only need about 7 ft and you are all set. It is nicer to work with than the clear tubing. Better insulated, and it is actualls NSF rated for the temperatures you encounter for brewing. Some tubing is simply NOT RATED for...

    Hello from new york!

I't funny how people think upstate NY is like a little dot above the city, isn't it? Welcome to HBT!

    Blowoff tube failure rate?

I had the same thing happen this last weekend, lol. It seems to clog quite easily with the 3/8" tubing. Really should use the 1" tubing for blow-off. That won't get plugged even if a whole hop gets into it.

    Refrigeration Question

Sure does. The 4 day period at room temp may need to be extended to be sure yeast have undergone a secondary fermentation. Try one, if it is flat then take them all out of refrig. and let rest for at least one week at room temp. Then re chill for a day or 2.

    Search tool question

There are 2 search boxes now. The top one (white box) is more of a web search. The bottom one (grey box) is the actual forum search. This caught me at first, too!

    Two in a day...

Yeah two in a day is a good feat, but if the weather's nice (usually is in SoCal), It is very rewarding as well as more efficient. Only have to really 'clean' things once at the end, can overlap some tasks... The last hour or two can be killer, but if a man's biggest problem at the end of the...

    Refrigeration Question

No real accurate answer can be given without a bit more information. Recipe, OG, FG, fermentation temperatures, etc. However they good thing is, you can feel free to have one today, then maybe one every other day or so. The taste might improve at each sampling, might not. The point is you...

    rhizomes

Sweet! You fellas have any advice on growning hop varieties that don't get quite so tall? Maybe 4 or so feet only.

    Back to Back brewing

biggenious has a good point. You can mash for hours while you are away/busy and then pick up at the sparge when you get back. Just don't expect a big jump in effeciency vs. 90 min mash. That was my expectation which didn't pan out. 90 min seems to be the point of diminishing return on most of...

    Back to Back brewing

I have done 2. It was an 8 hour shift, and I was durn tired. I did get 11 gallons of beer out of the deal... It really depends on how efficient your setup is. Not efficient in terms of extraction, but in terms of work done by you! If you have to walk up 2 floors from where you brew to get...

    Hop Growing in Pennsylvania

Still getting settled in, but soon I will bring the yak down from my parents place in PA. There are a lot of options when considering a boat. Check out www.paddling.net and/or PM me. It would be awesome to have a fishin/homebrew/boating buddy in the area!

    New wort chiller (Score)

Well I finally have a data point on this chiller. It cooled 5 gal of wort and my 10 gal Al pot from boiling temps to 70 in 11 min, with 60 degree tap water. I know true efficiency would involve the total amount of water used, but I had it hooked up to my faucet so the flow is not out of...

How many of you guys actually utilize a secondary fermenter?

I didn't vote. It depends on the beer. Most beers get 2 weeks fermenting, then to the keg for 2 weeks (purged), then carbed and served in a week. Over 1.060? Wait another 2 weeks b4 carb/serv cycle.

    Hop Growing in Pennsylvania

Dude, that's where I grew up. Mercer PA. Even knew a Stevenson come to think of it! Never grew hops there but a certain other cousin of hops has been known to thrive in the many acres of wilderness if given enough sun. Never needed a fence for those though... :drunk:

    New wort chiller (Score)

I bought some fittings on mcmastercarr to make this thing work. They're in the mail. It weighs 6.5 lbs with the copper extentions, so probably around 5.5-6 lbs safe bet on the Ti. Scrapping it may be a good idea if the performance is no good. adx, I will be using my old chiller for a...
