    20 Batches In

I'm still a bit shy of that mark at 17, one cider and one wine, but I've come to the same conclusion! Best Hobby ever! So far I've had one batch go bad on me. And about four others that I didn't like, all blonde ale / cream ale meant to go down easy with the BMC drinkers in my family. They've...

    Don't Do That.

In the end it did. My efficiency was horrible, so I added some DME and sugar (didn't have enough DME ) and ended up hitting my numbers perfectly.

    Brewing on a Weeknight

I do weeknights for a lot of my brews. If my recipe is set then it something like home at 5:30, done and cleaned up by 12. This week a lot of things didn't go according to plan, so I ended up killing the boil at 12. Luckily it's winter now, so I just left it out there to cool overnight and...

Mid-Mash- Uncrushed grains in mash- what to do?

A mill was on the Christmas list, so I'll see how that plays out then go from there. Okay, all drained and sparged. 6.25 gallons at 1.033 If I boil down to 5gal, I'll be at 1.041 I have 425g/.937lb of DME .937*(1.044-1) / 5 gal = .008 Brings me up to 1.049. I then need about .3 lbs of sugar to...

Mid-Mash- Uncrushed grains in mash- what to do?

Lol, no swmbo, just finances right now! I'm leaning DME way as well. I just need to make sure I do the math right. 1. Drain and sparge, mix together, take SG reading and adjust for temperature. 2. Use my running boil-off calculator to predict final volume, and use that to predict OG. 3. Add...

Football how I love and hate you

Don't y'all know football season ended last Sunday? ;)

    Don't Do That.

Pour the last bag of grain into your strike water, and then realize that the bag, which is about 50% of your grain bill, isn't crushed. Then frantically attempt to crush it in the blender and get into the mash with the rest of it. Don't do that.

    Confession Time

Confession: I've only used liquid yeast once and that batch went bad. Perfectly happy with dry yeast for the forseeable future. My beers taste great and its way less work.

    Two brew day screw-ups. Thoughts?

Thanks for the replies guys, I feel a bit less worried. I checked the temp this morning and it was almost at 60, and the thermometer came out with krausen gunk on it (I just stuck it through the airlock hole). The one edge of the bucket wasn't quite down from when my brother checked it last...

What do you do with your spent grains?

Another vote for the chickens- my brother's in this case. Short walk across the yard, dump the cooler, stop by the hose on the way back, and rinse. Done till next time. They also got all my grape stems and moldy grapes.

    Two brew day screw-ups. Thoughts?

So, I made my first IPA Monday night. Haven't brewed since September, did my first wine and apple cider though. A few things didn't really go according to plan so I thought I'd see what you guys think. First, was with my grain. Used 5.5kg of 2-row, comes in 2kg bags, easy enough right? It...

    Soapy Beer Flavor

I was getting a soapy taste in a few batches. I believe I was sparging too hot. Once I started keeping it below 170 I haven't had any problems. I'm starting to wonder if I don't like corn in my brews. I've been noticing a similar, almost soapy taste.

    Confession Time

Guilty 50/50, depends if I have time. Or remember. Or feel like it. Guilty :mug: I rarely use any cleaning products on my buckets. As soon as they're done being used I rinse for a few minutes with hot hot water and scrub (soft sponge, no abrasives). Every once in a while I'll fill one...

Can paint strainer bags effectively filter break material?

I used to try a braided hose in the kettle. That always clogged so I would try pouring through a bag. I only had a little hop bag so I always needed help, it was messy and clogged. Now I just dump it all in.

    Don't Do That.

Did that this week :( there was a big puddle on the floor before i noticed.

How long have you suffered through bad batch of homebrew?

My first batch ever was pretty rough... not sure I'd keep it now. But I drank it all. Third batch was a Irish Red that went wrong- it wasn't great to start with and must have had a bit of an infection because it got progressively sharper and gushier. I kind of stopped drinking it, and then sort...

Homebrewing for fun ( and money )

Close friends... family... don't post about it on the internet... Lots of illegal things slip by if you're not stupid.
