How Many Gallons of Homebrew in 2018?

    1142.5 + 5 gallons Cascade Pale Ale 1147.5
  2. jonny24

    Benefit of kegging.

I ferment mostly in 5 gallon buckets, so 4.5 - 4.75 gallon batches. So no wasted beer here.

    Clearing Beer - Why?

Me too. It really impresses people when you can hand them a beer that looks like commercial quality- then they taste it and continue to be impressed. Really helps with the Bud Light crowd (a few of my uncles unfortunately).

    Don't Do That.

Buy a tap-wrench-thingy a few months after you installed your tap by hand tightening, forget the collar nut is reverse threaded, and turn it the wrong way, letting beer shoot out all around the collar. Don't do that.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Got a free pound of local grown Cascade - well, in exchange for some beer made with it. I'm going to do a series of beers using it in different ways to show the grower what they can do. First up tomorrow is my pilsner recipe swapping in the cascades instead of Perle and saaz. If I feel...

Survey: if you could do one thing over again regarding Homebrew would it be?

I'm about two years in, can't say I'd want to have done too much differently. I went from a turkey fryer pot to my Spike 10 gallon, but still use the other one as a HLT. Kegging sooner maybe, but I lived with my parents until last April so I wouldn't have had space for my own fridge. Still need...

    Average age of home brewers......

No option for u-21? Not everyone lives in prohibition land ;) 24, by the way, and I'm trying to do 5 gallons every other week or so to try and get a steady pipeline.

Any place in Canada where I can buy a Keging system and kegs.

Where was that? I've been quoted around $40 in Hamilton and Brantford.

How long before you made your first real good beer?

I don't have my brew book handy, but I want to say it was probably around my 7th brew as well. My first 3 were extract- first one was pretty bleh, would probably dump it if I made it today but thought it was okay at the time. The next two were okay, then I switched to AG. The first couple...

Sooooo... What'd you get for Christmas?

That they are! My brother is a fantastic woodworker, and learns a new skill or two every year, usually to make Christmas presents. Stained glass, wood bending, carving, intarsia, upholstery... this year was turning. All I have to offer in return is beer... he doesn't seem to mind!

So.... what is "Ale" by any other standards??

I think he's being intentionally hilarious... getting everyone riled up. Probably posted in this thread already :P

Sooooo... What'd you get for Christmas?

Here's two of them, I haven't used the third one (only one tap). Top one is mahogany, bottom one is cherry and birdseye maple.

Any place in Canada where I can buy a Keging system and kegs.

I got all my kegging stuff from OBK. About a month ago they had a deal on ball locks- I got 4 for 188, that's with tax and delivery.

Sooooo... What'd you get for Christmas?

From my brother: Three custom tap handles that he turned on his lathe. From my girlfriend: A coaster with my logo wood-burned into it, an LED board to go next to my kegerator, a beer-tasting party kit with sample glasses, tasting note sheets and food pairing book, and a glass from the Fullers...
