Has anyone in NE been to Millys Tavern in Manchester NH?

Sounds fun.. gonna have to stop in there next time I drive through Manchester. Chris

    Home Grown Hops score!!!

I noticed that the wort absorption was a pretty big factor in my first batch using whole leaf. Could that cause a loss of OG? I did strain the water I added to make up loss through the hops to try to "rinse" them. Chris

Do I need to add yeast for bottling?

I just brewed a barley wine from a recipe that has instructions to add yeast 3 days before bottling. I was concerned about using a different strain (I pitched Wyeast Am Ale I). It also has a dry hop. Do I need to worry about an interaction there? That is.. should I rack again to get it off the...

    Understanding Mr Malty

I have a porter ready to make too.. where there be any issue with color if I use the yeast from the porter? Part of the reason I want to start with the Barleywine is I have LME I want to use for that I need to use soon.. I have enough DME for my other two recipes but would be under no...

    Brewpots.........

I hadn't considered K-mart. I will have to check them out. Now that I am moving to partial grain a 32 qt would be perfect.

    Brewpots.........

I bought an enamel coated 21.5 qt pot at Walmart for $19. It has been great for brewing extract. By the time you are ready to move on you will know what you want.. and you will have a great pot for heating mash water or boiling lobsters. My wife uses it for canning. Chris

    Understanding Mr Malty

Yes, I noticed that made a big difference. Since I bought everything to brew over the next few months it will make a big difference for my starters down the line.. Chris

    Stalled Fermentation

I am looking forward to drafting my little helpers. Having them carry the bottles is a nice idea. It will be interesting to see what kind of flavor toddler snot adds to the beer.

What is the deal with new bottle prices?

I have a friend who drinks a LOT of Sam Adams by the case. They make great bottles and the labels are easy to get off. Best part is.. I can replace them any time i want so I don't worry to much about getting them back.. For home use I have a few hundred Guinness Pint bottles from my...

    Understanding Mr Malty

Thanks.. that makes sense. Is there a saturation point where I need a larger starter wort rather then just stepping through iterations of 2 qt? Chris

    Understanding Mr Malty

Hi, I purchases some Wyeast Propagator packs for use in some upcoming recipes while I was on a road trip. The first recipe on my list is a partial mash Barley Wine that should have a FG of 1.104. I plugged in the numbers into Mr Malty and it says I need 6 qts of starter if I want to use...

What to brew for first beer ?

I am new again, having returned after a 10 year hiatus, so take my advice with a grain of salt, or better yet.. a beer! Don't be afraid of the specialty grains. Up until now I put them in a muslin bag and steeped them like a tea bag. Very easy. Adds to the fun. Brewing darker beers has a...

Use of branded malt extract in a recipe

According to their website, the Alexander's Pale Malt is SRM 2.2... to get a consistent color should I use Munton's Extra-Light? My understanding is they tend toward a bit darker.. Thanks, Chris

Use of branded malt extract in a recipe

Hi, I have a number of recipes I am getting ready to buy ingredients for during a road trip that will take me by some good brew shops. They are out of the book Beer Captured. I am going to try the Sierra Nevada Porter and the Sierra Nevada Bigfoot (so it can be ready for Dec 31st, 2011..)...

    Stalled Fermentation

I saw that product. I would like to get my Minis going if I can. The CO2 keeps it from going flat.. which is fine if the beer is not foamy or flat to begin with. If I can't get it to work I will look at that. Nice thread. I love that sanitizer. That and star san would transform the process...

    Stalled Fermentation

Because its in plastic.. I am wary of leaving anything in plastic more then a month. Is that not an issue? Thanks, Chris

    Stalled Fermentation

I have a mini-keg system, the one that takes 5L kegs and a 16g CO2 carridge. I had trouble using it in the past. It would either be foamy or flat. I am going to try again, but I am wary of it. I was delighted when I unboxed my stuff and besides having two totes full of guinness pint bottles I...

hop bag? Spice ball during boil?

I have used Muslin sacks and find those very easy to work with. They even hold in a fair bit of the pellets. I saw the nylon bags at the store but it seems like it would be too much bother to clean. When I am finished using the sacks with specialty grain I throw them into a mixing bowl, then...

    Stalled Fermentation

I did read through the threads last night. I think most of my process works just fine.. and the need to sanitize everything was true then and still true now.. and understanding that is my biggest advantage as a semi-newb. At this point I will probably only rack if I miss a bottling night as...

    Stalled Fermentation

I Wasn't going to until this weekend. It will have been a week. I could probably wait a little longer... just need it in glass before I go off on vacation in case bottling gets put off.. I didn't think that racking it would stop the fermentation. I had always done it after primary was done. I...
