    Newbie in Ohio

Too early to be super worried yet, although the film on top doesn't look awesome at the 15 day mark. Go ahead and take the stopper out and take a good whiff. It should smell like baked bread and beer. It should not have an unpleasant odor. It should not have a vinegar/medicinal/sulfur smell. If...

    Newbie in Ohio

After you have brewed a dozen more... you will find that you simply don't worry about these things anymore. As long as you did the proper procedures to encourage a good fermentation - a good fermentation is what you will get 99.9% of the time. Yeast do what they do. Out of all the things to...

    Instapot with sous vide-brewing question

"Never tried the instapot for beer before".... .... said Homer Simpson

    First Batch Questions

Congratulations!.... you should sneak one out after 7 days. It won't be at it's best yet, but by then it will be fairly carbed. What I do... put it in the freezer for about 30 minutes. This will cold crash all the yeast and any suspended yeast will begin to fall to the bottom. Then put it in...

    Worst Craft Beer Of ALL-TIME!

I had forgotten about that one, I tried one yeeears ago and thought the exact same thing. Awful.... how is it even possible it made it to the bottle? How did someone in the first makings think this thing was good?

    So.... how do you chill?

We water plants with it, we have a large fountain on the property with fish in it. I will pour it in there in dry months to replenish the water.

    So.... how do you chill?

One of the things I love about brewing is all of the DIY little projects/methods that people develop to solve problems. As in a different thread here, I wanted to build a venting system to get all of the heat/humidty out of the brewroom. I was trying to figure out what to use for the "hood" and...

    So.... how do you chill?

... the wort that is. I use an immersion chiller. I like the ease of cleanup, and not having to worry about thoroughly cleaning the lines of a counterflow etc. I use to do it like most, hooking it up to a faucet/spigot and wasting a ton of water. But during the summer it just took waaay too...

Difference in taste between bottle and keg

As a new "kegger" - I noticed this as well. Keg beer is "smoother" and taste different than bottled. The last beer I made I put in a 2 gallon keg, and the rest bottled. You would have though this was two different batches. It is just different. They both taste good, just different.

First BIAB underway - Centennial Blonde Ale

I never do less than 1:15, sometimes 1:30. Usually I go to do something else and if it is close to the 90 minutes I go ahead and start the boil.

    Spike brewing

Same here.... when I received my pot I was missing a part. They sent the part 2nd day air, and even had a hand written sorry note.

First BIAB underway - Centennial Blonde Ale

Pretty much what I do also. I remove the pot from the burner and I have two heavy blankets I wrap around it. I only lose a couple degrees in the hour and a half I mash.

    What are you drinking now?

My own Pale Ale. I brew it primarily for my wife. She likes Citra hops a lot and wanted a lower cal beer.

No not at all.... just funny how he reacted to the thought you might be boiling with his bag in the kettle!

You Tube Rabbit Hole or Anyone remember when MTV played videos?

MTV was amazing the first few years. No commercials, nothing but music videos and...honestly.... we all wanted to boink Martha Quinn.

My first can of Busch in twenty years...

I was a Bud Light drinker from the first time I tried it waay back when it first came out in 1982. I drank that till well into my 20's before I had my first craft beer at a place called Fox River Brewing in Wisconsin. We were having dinner at their restaurant, and I kept seeing the waitress...

    Worst Craft Beer Of ALL-TIME!

Hands down the worst craft beer I have ever had was Stone Mocha IPA. Super rare do i buy a bomber and take one or two drinks and literally pour the whole thing out. This...was a no brainer drain pour.

My first can of Busch in twenty years...

A couple years ago was at a cookout with several friends and I decided to try a drink of my ex wife's sisters Miller Lite. WOW - I had forgotten just how watery macro lager is. Stealing a line from Ron Theroit... "I can't decide if it is water pretending to be beer, or beer trying to be water".
