    Warm Fermented Lager Thread

I use a small oil less air compressor for keg cleaning. It has a water/oil trap on the line so the air is clean. Fill keg(I do it lid off with a hose into the keg. Then purge the head space only with CO2 before I seal the lid down. In the 2 minutes or so it takes to fill a keg the beer is not...

Most annoying response when you tell someone you're a homebrewer?

So far no complaints about my beer... but I am not a hop head so nothing is overly bitter. Now my mead attempts have gotten some weird looks... all have been drinkable but I think the alcohol content surprises people who are thinking 5% beer like my "house" ale that gets brewed the most. They...

Turning BoiL KEtTle on Low during Sparge?

I start the BK burner when the HLT is empty, my FG always hits where it should, like my house ale that ends at 1.010 or so

Turning on boil kettle during continuous sparge???

When the HLT is empty I start the BK burner as the mash tun finishes draining... I have my recipes down where no extra water is wasted...

Survey: How much money does all grain save vs. mini mash kits.

$14 for a full tank refill here but if I only do a half they often toss it in free(I am a part of the co-op so it saves me money plus I get a check for profit sharing every 6 months). I only buy grain in bulk except for a few specialty crystal malts(there usually 10 pounds at a time) where I use...

    Brewing Toolbox

Good set of wrenches is all you need. Doesn't hurt to have a couple screwdrivers handy for worm clamps... rubber mallet is nice for making sure lids are tight on fermenting buckets...

pull-out faucet to garden hose adapter

I couldn't find anything to fit the wand but after removing it I found a fitting to barb adapter that worked. Think it was 1/2 inch...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Brewing Thursday, supposed to be 38 degrees... going to try a warm fermented SMASH lager. Simple recipe, will make a boring beer but will give me an idea of how warm fermenting lagers turn out!

What I did for beer today

Racked my Cyser to secondary, taste tested it(oof that stuff has some alcohol!) and put it back into the pantry for another month or two...

    Funky Smelling brew

Looks like hop oils, CO2 bubbles, but that powdery looking stuff is hard to tell what it is. Could be mold...

Question before I start drilling holes.

10 gallon mash tun won't be big enough for 10 gallon batches unless they are low gravity. When I do 11 gallon batches of my "house" ale I am right at 10 gallons, OG is typically 1.054 on it.
  16. MaryB

    Oh Wow!

Add a brew in a bag to the bucket... I started with that style mash tun back in the early 80's. They do work but I would not use that style chiller with it. The bucket in bucket is not that much different than my stainless pot with the false bottom I use...

    Any Bacon Makers Here?

I do buckboard AKA shoulder bacon a lot. This was a batch from a few years ago. I debone then butterfly the shoulder if it is really thick otherwise just debone it. Best sandwich bacon out there! I love belly bacon but the price for uncured belly here is insane! 3 times what a shoulder costs...

Any affordable 1 1/2 gallon kegs out there?

The 5 liter mini kegs I have seen : rusted, leaked, one exploded under 12psi... PASS I was looking for best price on quality. Right now 2 small kegs at $150 for the pair is no tin my budget for cider and mead that I do not make that often! Bottling a gallon is not that hard of work compared to...

    Glass Carboy Excitement

I had some of the cheap Chinese glassware shatter on the stove as I was bringing a starter to a simmer to sterilize it(I freeze my starter wort). What a mess to clean up! Now I only buy name brand, right now using Klimax and they are twice as thick as the cheap junk.

Yorkshire Square on a home level?

Pump will need to be continuous duty.... check the specs on the brew pumps out there to see if they are that.
