    Spent Grain Poll

Wow. A lot of you guys have chickens. That's cool and all. It just seems odd that so many homebrewers also raise chickens. Maybe time for another poll.

    SS Brew Bucket "dip tube"

Funny, I have my first batch fermenting in my new brew bucket. When I set mine up I did so so that the tube would be pointed straight up when the valve is in the upright position. Prior to racking wort to it I positioned the valve and tube horizontally to the left. My thinking being that it...

    Question about Chillers

I've never seen that done, but it seems feasible if that is what you have to work with. You probably wouldn't really need to sanitize it if it went into near boiling wort. Certain plastics are supposedly bad to heat that hot as they can leach chemicals or something. No expert on it though.

Sparge temp question, better to err on the side of...?

Sorry if I confused the situation with my description. I currently have one burner and a kettle for it. I use this for water heating and for the boil. I also have a 10 gallon cooler that I use for a MLT. So when the mash is almost over I will heat my sparge water in the kettle and then transfer...

Sparge temp question, better to err on the side of...?

Great information. Thanks guys. Also, I may have to try a batch sparge brew pretty soon to see if it compliments my current system better.

Sparge temp question, better to err on the side of...?

Hey gang, Currently I only have one burner and kettle. So I use it for heating strike water, sparge water, and for the boil. I manage this by shifting wort around in buckets and storing my sparge water in an extra water cooler. The problem I run into is that my sparge water is usually a little...

Show us your sculpture or brew rig

Of course it counts. I'm loving the aluminum pan with what I assume are holes in it to sprinkle the sparge water. I'm going to have to try that.

    Wort Chiller

Hydra for me. It is stupid faster than the regular one I had from NB.

    New to brew, fermentation question

Please don't assume that I am an expert, these are just my thoughts. If you were vigorously fermenting for 5-6 days prior to your temperature drop, then you are probably pretty good for the most part. You can take gravity reading to see if you hit your target FG or not. Then you can take further...

    Bottling and kegging

This is what I do as well. No big deal. In the interest of full disclosure, the only time I do this is so that I can take some brew to the brew club meetings. So basically, it is consumed the same day. I don't know how this would do if you were to then store the bottles for a month or something...

    Question about Brew Kettle size

If you are satisfied with making 5 gallon extract batches and only concerned about the top off water being added after the fact, then I say keep on doing what you are doing. Just make sure you have quality water. As said above, chilled water helps cool your wort as well. However, if you are...

To secondary or not to secondary

While I totally understand and can appreciate option 3. I would go with option 1 and brew another batch this weekend. Option 2 would would be the least desirable in my mind.

I Made A Homebrew FAQ For People Who Have Never Had Homebrew

Very nicely done and very well written, grammatically. My only criticism is with this sentence: "Maybe, ask the homebrewer who shared her beer with you if she would like to have the bottle/s back." I feel like this promotes the gender stereotype that only women are able to cook things. Don't...

Lactic acid Brunwater vs Beersmith 3

I use the lactic acid calcs in BS3 and usually use about 30% less than recommended. I do this because I don't have a pH meter and the amount seems high. I did purchase a meter this morning as Thermoworks has a sitewide sale at the moment. So, I hope to be able to see what is happening in reality...

    Want to get into brewing

If experimentation to try various recipes and to tweak things with a variety of ingredients is up your alley, and it sounds like it is, then you may want to skip the extract and plan for BIAB right away. Working with all grain/BIAB gives you the ability to do anything you with a recipe for the...

    Water advice

Thanks h22lude. I guess what I was thinking about was checking the pH of my mash and then using that as a guide to see if I should experiment with some crude acid additions over time to try and get my mash into the correct range. I certainly do feel that getting the whole profile correct from...

    Water advice

Thanks for the well written response. That is the kind of inspiration I needed. I really feel like I need to delve into it. I guess I need to go water shopping and see what is available in my area. I had considered sending some water off to Ward Labs, but if it is going to change throughout the...

    Water advice

I've been considering trying to tighten up my brewing water game. I live in a medium-small sized city. I called the water board to get info on my water composition. They really couldn't help me too much because they said that the city has three different water sources. We use surface water, well...
