    Great Books

Dis- 'New Brewing Lager Beer' by Greg Noonan. Full of good info about general brewing as well as lager and DECOCTION (love that word). It does get a little heavy at times, tho. Also many of the AOB 'Classic Beer Stlyes' series are worthwhile. Sully

Round Vs. Square Cooler for Mash Tun

ferd- Sqr/ rect is cheaper and much easier to find. As long as you're batch sparging about anything will do for a false bottom. Don't have to solder copper (or PVC) manifold- press fit is fine. SS braid is often used, either as a ring or just a straight piece. It's about fluid dymanics (see...

    cheap grain mill

Rev- Everyone raves about their own! Crankandstein has a basic $70 one, with prices going up from there. The Barleycrusher comes complete w/ base, grain bin, & crank for $132 or so shipped. That's what I'm leaning toward. Schmidling's MaltMill seems a little expensive- nonadjustable $110+...

    Sam's Club Refer, cooler

Hey all- Just wondering if anyone has used the GE compact refer @ Sam's for a kegerator or lagering fridge?! No freezer, seems(?) plenty big enuf for cornys & connections, under $110. Also, my Sam's has 5g Igloo round coolers under $20. Thx in advance for any & all replies. Sully

    Quick question:

Dude- Just a passing note (too late, da**it!). Some whole 2-row toasted at 350F for 10-15 min gives a nice toasty, biscuity note. Some say to cure it for a week or 2 after, but I've used it straight in the mash in the best beer ever. Just for future reference. Sully

    Ice dam on my roof

Thanks for posting that! I put up some gutters as a Christmas surprise for SWMBO, but they're on a screen porch w/ low roof angle. Guess I'll spring for another downspout, even though it doesn't snow much here. Lots of rain & freezing temps, tho!

    deciphering my water report

Todd- Do a search for (or buy!) John Palmer's "How to Brew." It has a very good dicussion on water treatment and water reports. You made need to talk to your water co. engineer to find out the total dissolved solids, hardness, calcium and alkalinity, etc. Palmer 'splains it better in Ch. 15-...

    Someone with the recent BYO....

BP you are being far too modest. There are probably 5 things in YOUR set-up that Jim is drooling over. If you guys get together, I think homebrew heaven or hell will break out in NM! I just hope HE'S prepared. And make sure that the ATF people aren't monitoring your meeting! Can't wait for my...

Save it til spring- the slugs will love it! Or use it to steam some dogs. Hard to beat garnished w/ onion, pickle, & tomato.

ablrbrau- A coupla SNPA's under my belt again tonite. Don't watch much anymore, but still keep my nose in the 'Green Sheet' on Monday. I can't get away from the Tit-ans, working in downtown Nashville! Favre (sp? lol) has a ring, so many near greats don't (Dan M.- MR. T.V). PLUS , thanks to...

    Favre overload--COUNTDOWN TO 421

I'm sorry, ablrbrau, but he better pull a John Elway if he's gonna break a certain F-n Niner's Super Bowl passing records. Reg. season stats only go so far! Sully

If SWMBO gave you 280 sq. ft.........

Ed- Sorry to hear you have such a small space! Mine is 16x20! HA! I'm just finishing the sheetrock and insulation. So far it's got light, plugs, window hvac, & an attic ladder. I'm still working on how the lay-out will be. No plumbing to be had, sorry. Good luck on your project. Sully

    DIY grain mill

[ Now I just need to add some set screws for the eccentrics, a top, and a hopper. Should be a piece of cake from here! My next brew is a 15 gallon batch with 31 lbs of grain. I think that'll be a suitable test, don't you?
