Come on spring!! Here we go again. Anyone have soil/shoots showing?

Holy crap you guys are makin' me crazy...:drunk::drunk::drunk::drunk: I went to town today and bought a roll of roofing paper and split it into 3 and rolled it out over the rows...If we continue with sunshine for a week, I should be down to soil shortly. My goal is to be able to harvest in...

Come on spring!! Here we go again. Anyone have soil/shoots showing?

Well it's been warm here, 10-12C during the days but still 0 at night. We still have a foot of snow on the ground. Got desperate today and tried the snowblower...way to heavy...and mushy...guess we'll just have to wait. Last year I put down old shingles over the row to absorb the solar energy...

Yup, all growing on a 5' fence, thick as can be, probably 200+ feet of them.

Rhizome buds at this time of year??? My first rhizome harvesting experience.

Well they are all kissed goodnight and tucked in for a long winter's nap, and not a moment too soon...-5C and snowing now. Put them about 3" down in a mix of very old horse manure and soil and then covered them with a few inches more of horse poop. cheers

Rhizome buds at this time of year??? My first rhizome harvesting experience.

Thanks Bob! In my haste to get them out of the ground before tumbling back down the hill, I really just yanked them out, there are very few if any fine roots, just the main root with the buds. Should I go back with proper excavation equipment and be more careful to retain the fine little roots...

Rhizome buds at this time of year??? My first rhizome harvesting experience.

I just found a large mass of hops on the edge of an new orchard, which I believe used to be an old hop yard, and decided to bring a few rhizomes home. They are growing on a steep slope up against a fence, and the ground was incredibly soft and lots of mulch from years of being left alone, so I...

Do you rehang your bines after harvest?

Okay on all, good info. The ones I have left on the ground are still healthy, as are the hanging ones, but we are now getting 0C at night and the leaves are starting to turn yellow. I still have Nuggets, Galenas and my mystery hops to pick, as they are still maturing, but otherwise, all plants...

Do you rehang your bines after harvest?

Just wondering if it's necessary to rehang the bines after harvest of each plant is complete? Most of mine are 17' tall and I could rehang, but if they will continue to be happy on the ground, it would be great. I have about 100 plants so it's a bit of work. I will still cut them back mid...

    Drying unorthodox-ed

B-Hoppy explained it to me really well a few weeks ago....if you can break the stig (stem) of the hop, they are dry and ready to bag. If they are still flexible, when you bag them and freeze, the moisture in the stem comes back out into the petals and re moisturizes them. There is probably a...

    Hop drying question.

So I picked a few of the smaller Centennial plants, enough for one layer on a 2x3' screen drier, I have 6 I made for last years harvest but I have built 4x5 footers for this year. Anyway, picked them a week ago today and have been monitoring them daily and giving them a little fluffing. They...

    Hop drying question.

Oh man...I can't believe I haven't heard about this before. Thanks Bob!! ..it explains a lot about my last years harvest and some of the issues I had in the freezer and when brewing....they weren't completely dry but they sure felt like it. Thanks again....you probably saved me from the same...

    Horse trailer Oast??

The blower is installed and tested, it's a direct drive 3 speed fan which moves a lot of air. When I power it up and close up the trailer, with just the opposite side windows open, it creates a pretty good breeze inside the trailer. :ban: Will keep you posted when harvest time gets here, but...

Can same bine have vastly different "harvest" dates?

To answer your original question, yes you can have different harvest dates on the same bine, top matures earlier for me...I have 65 new plants this year and most of them have nice big cones near the top...but little hard cones hear the bottom.....hopefully next year they will settle out and be...

    Horse trailer Oast??

Thanks Dan, For this year, I should be fine as 65 plants are new and not much production, and 8 different varieties all ripening at different times...and FYI, today it is 21C outside, but the trailer is 31C and 16% humidity, with nothing inside yet. That's encouraging. :ban: Cheers

    Horse trailer Oast??

Hey Dan, Thanks for the quick reply. Well, what my thought was is to build screens/frames, free to sit on saw horses or whatever inside the trailer, but spread out, not stacked and actually use the trailer as the oast, and pull air out of the trailer, but through the window screens of the...

    Horse trailer Oast??

Hi gang I want to run this past the group for some feedback before I start construction. I have an unused horse trailer, about 18' with screened windows and many doors. It's never had a horse in it, just used for equipment, it's clean. My thought is to use large window/door screens laid out...

How long before I see a sprout

B-Hoppy Thanks man. That's some good info. We have had cooler WX here and the little guys seem to be hangin in under the bucket halves. We just had a major rain event today, and the ground is very wet...Supposed to be back to hot and dry this week, into the 30's again. Hopefully the little ones...
