Any tricks to ship clear, bottle primed beer to a competition?

The title said it all: Even if you have a nice clear beer in a bottle, wouldn't the jostling that takes place during shipping kick up the sediment created by the bottle priming, resulting in the judges seeing a cloudy beer? One option is to force carbonate in the keg and dispense into a...

    Newbie here!

OK, here's what I found doing two FG readings on my cream ale. Hydro: 1.010 (I use a finishing hydrometer, so I'm confident this is a precise measurement) Refract: 6.0 brix (beer is clear; nice crisp line. so again, a precise measurement) According to the NB calculator that estimates OG/ABV...

    Aeration Question

Man, I've been stirring vigorously after putting the yeast into the water to rehydrate, then again after 20 minutes right before pitching. For years.

    Newbie here!

I can't believe I've never heard of this until now! I have a cream ale that's finishing up, so when it's ready I'll do both a ref. reading and a hydro reading, plug it into the calculator, and post the results/accuracy of the calculator. I'm sure it'll work as expected, but hey why not.

hahhahah. Hey, as long as only ONE doesn't have a label, we're OK!

    Newbie here!

Hey, could you post the link to that website? I'm very curious. On a couple occasions I've taken FG readings with both the refractometer and the hydrometer (the hydro reading being the most reliable as its readings are not altered by alcohol like the refract's are), just to see how accurate...

    Newbie here!

No way to get ABV without knowing the OG with the usual tools (refractometer or hydrometer), since ABV is determined by those devices as the difference in gravity (G) before fermentation OG vs. after fermentation FG. You could use your FG measurement and what OG was SUPPOSED to be (the target...

    Newbie here!

You've come to the right place. Let us know if you have any questions about the instructions. Sometimes they're not completely clear. Just remember that despite small frustrations and uncertainty you'll experience, in the end you'll get beer. Even this first time. You may even get lucky...

    Aeration Question

At least one wine kit I've used specifically said not only to sprinkle the yeast across the surface (as opposed to rehydrate), but to just leave it on the surface and not mix it in. Anyone know the reason for that? I get why mixing isn't necessary, but the specific instruction to not do it...

    Bud Light Seltzer

From what I can tell, no, just more choices in flavoring.

    Bud Light Seltzer

hahaha. But why even exclude wine like that? It would be equally fitting to call everything that meets that definition "wine". Why not this instead?: 27 CFR 25.11 defines wine as a fermented beverage containing 0.5 or more percent of alcohol by volume, brewed or produced from grapes or from...

    Bud Light Seltzer

Legal definitions can be so strange. No malt? No hops? Not beer.

    Bud Light Seltzer

Love this observation: ...Budweiser is a beer. Light is an adjective describing what kind of beer. Seltzer is … not beer. “Bud Light Seltzer” is like selling “Smoked Gouda Folding Chairs.”

12 Beers of Christmas 2019 Edition

Thanks! So glad you like it. Your comment is surprising because I feel the opposite: that the ginger is too strong! In both the test batch and the final brew my issue was not getting enough hop flavor/aroma to overcome the ginger. (even though I upped the hops significantly for the final)...

    Nitrogen?

Looks like there's a lot to it, but as you saw the short answer is "Well, there's SOME Nitro in the beer."

    Nitrogen?

Will definitely check those out. Your link went to two videos, which are cued up. Judging from the PDF, these are going to be very informative. Thanks!

    Nitrogen?

In that spirit... My understanding is that Nitrogen does not diffuse into the beer, but rather you carbonate with CO2, and N only pushes the beer through. But I must be missing a piece here. The dip tube takes beer from the bottom of the keg (with apparently no N in it) up dip tube, through...

His last post seems to be from October 12: Life got away from me there for a min. But Spiced Dunkel Weizenbock is being brewed right now for the West coast group! So stoked to be apart of this thing. I'll post some pictures soon. Thanks gang. And he much more recently provided mailing...
