OG was way off - missing wort volume

I shook the hell out of the carboy but it is possible that it's a bad reading. I was surprised to see how much water i needed to add to the carboy. Almost a gallon more than usual.

OG was way off - missing wort volume

Thanks for the responses. I added water to the carboy until it reached five gallons (unintentionally diluting the beer to lower the OG). The problem was that my wort (originally 3 gallons) ended up at 2 gallons after the final boil. I know this would be higher gravity but i did not intend on...

OG was way off - missing wort volume

Didn't get much feedback on the Full/Partial Mash section so i will try again here: Another batch with a new problem. This was my 6th mini mash batch and until this one, i've never had a problem with the OG. The estimate was 1.047 and my final OG turned out to be 1.037. I noticed with this...

Hello, Another batch with a new problem. This was my 6th mini mash batch and until this one, i've never had a problem with the OG. The estimate was 1.047 and my final OG turned out to be 1.037. I noticed with this batch was that the volume of wort i poured into the carboy was about a gallon...

    Secondary @ 1.02

Thanks. That's what i imagine it will do.

    Secondary @ 1.02

Hello, I racked a belgian wit to my secondary last night after six days of primary fermentation. The OG was 1.052 and read 1.02 when i transferred. I would generally leave it in the primary for 2 weeks before racking to secondary or would go without a secondary all together but i needed to...

    Infected starter?

    Infected starter?

Hello, Two issues with this starter: 1) I ordered my Wyeast pale ale yeast off AHS. When i pulled the pack out of my fridge it was cold and partially inflated. Turns out the smack pack was already broken (most likely during shipping). I decided to pitch it into a starter to see if it's...

Broken Glass - Thermometer and Hydrometer

Brewed up a batch over the weekend and ran into some very frustrating glass instrument issues. First, thermometer broke after taking a reading of sparge water @170 and dropping it in room temp sanitized water. I originally thought this was due to shock. So I put the brew on hold and ran to my...

    Heavy beer tastes awful

Yes, I realized that i went a bit overboard on this drunken brew day after i saw the OG. I was pushing the limits and learned my lesson :cross: Thanks for the feedback.

    Heavy beer tastes awful

Yes I mean a FG of 1.022. The recipe said the OG should be around 1.079 but I added a AHS alcohol boost to get it up to 1.11. It fermented between 61-67 degrees. Next time i will leave it in the Primary for another month. How much time in the bottle do you think it will take to reduce the esters...

    Heavy beer tastes awful

I recently brewed a PranQster clone from extract. This was my first time brewing a heavy beer and I messed up a couple of steps. I'm looking for advice on what i should do differently for the next heavy beer and if this one is salvageable. First, my OG was 1.11 and I pitched two vials of...

    Favorite IPA Recommendation Please

Like the title says, i'm looking for a fairly simple extract IPA recipe. I'd like to order from AHS sometime this week. This will be my first IPA and hopefully something with a less than a generic IPA flavor. Thank you in advance!

    White Labs Liquid Yeast Problem

Last week i brewed up a North Coast PranQster clone that i ordered off AHS. I have never used white labs liquid yeast and simply followed the instructions (didn't make a starter). This was a big beer, about 1.10 if i remember correctly, so i pitched two vials of Trappist Ale WLP500. A couple...
