I have the slimline versions which are 1 inch taller. Individually they are 15.75", stacked they measure 30.5". So thats a 1 inch saving from stacking. *IF* the you get the same saving with the standard torpedo kegs you will just make it.

I properly use my proper pH meter in a proper manner. Anything less would be quite improper.

Like you say, circulating boiling water heats up the chiller anyway. I'm also not that worried about optimizing power usage for 4 - 8 gallon batches ;). My HLT is a corny keg so perhaps I gain some heat retention vs a full sized kettle when you consider the surface areas.

Very interested in how you get on with this. The flavor of birch sap is very mild and I'd imagine you could easily drown it out with malt so I'd go for an extremely light beer. Also, in my experience, heating does a lot of damage to the freshness of birch sap so the boiling it might not work out...
