    Immersion chiller flow speed?

This is a really dumb question, but what kind of flow should I be looking for when using my IC? I've only had it for one batch thus far, and I really cranked the water up - and it took almost as long as an ice bath to cool down to pitching temp (40+ minutes). My tap water is around 65 degrees...

low OG and SG, need higher ABV

If it was a kit, I am surprised that your OG was only 1.034 - it's very difficult to miss your OG in an extract kit. Did you add any top-up water? If so, did you mix the wort well after doing this before you took a reading with your hydrometer? If not, you probably just pulled a sample that...

Verdict in on first AG batch

Not trying to be a jerk here (disclaimer: I haven't even started my first AG batch yet), but you can be damn sure that I will have a hydrometer and several lbs of extract on hand during my first AG batch in case I end up with crappy efficiency. Some people seem really down on hydrometers...

    Why go all grain?

I know exactly what you are talking about with the same extract 'taste' in every batch; my wife, who is a professional chef, can't taste it, and neither can my friends - but I can, and it makes me nuts. My scottish ales, APAs and Irish reds have all had it. Late extract addition seems to have...

Engagement Rings-how much did it set you back?

Got engaged fresh out of college and spent ~$2500 on a ring. Looks like that puts me in the low end of the spectrum based on some of the responses I've read, but hey, you buy what you can afford. Do not ever let a jeweler pull the whole "the more you spend, the more you love her" crap...

Cheap & Easy 10 Gallon Rubbermaid MLT Conversion

I have one question regarding the update to the instructions (substituting cut vinyl tubing for the hose clamps). FlyGuy states the he used 7/16" x 5/17" vinyl tubing... I am not the most handy guy in the world, so I'm not exactly sure what he's talking about. I am guessing that this means...

    Gushers!

You could also open and re-cap once you've cooled them down; cooling it down should help prevent the gusher, and re-capping should release enough CO2 to bring it down to a normal carbonation level.

Minimum pot size for 5 gallon AG batch?

That's great to hear, thank you! Just water in the spray bottle, or is there some kind of special anti-foam product I should use? Water would be best (I'm a cheap bastard), but I'm willing to buy something extra (within reason) if it gets me into AG faster.

Minimum pot size for 5 gallon AG batch?

I just purchased all the equipment needed to build a 10 gallon Gott-style mash tun for batch sparging (using FlyGuy's great instructions in this thread. The last piece of equipment I need to go AG is a burner and pot; I have been seriously considering a Bayou Classic turkey fryer for $50...

Roomate needs a kick in the junk

How large was your priming solution? Everything I've read says that the amount of yeast killed by siphoning onto a hot priming solution is not significant enough to make a difference in bottle conditioning.

    First Brew

This happened to me on my very first batch ever. It didn't turn out amazing (APA-style SNPA-clone), but better than I thought it would after doing that.

    American Pale Ale Recipe Advice

I've only made one batch of beer, so I am speaking more from theory than practical experience. With that said, dry-hopping produces a very different effect than adding hops to the brewpot during the boil. When you dry-hop, you add the hops to either your primary or secondary fermentation (I...

    Greetings!

Just wanted to stop in and introduce myself. I am currently bottle conditioning my very first batch of homebrew, an American Pale Ale. Whether or not it ends up tasting good, I am excited to continue homebrewing - I am planning on picking up a carboy for secondary fermentation today along with...
