Making a 2 Gallon Mini MLT

Good question weetodd: Let's look at some simple math. Depending on who you ask/what tickness of mash you want/what type of beer you are brewing, you will need between 1-2 liters of water per pound of grain (there are 3.79 liters in a gallon). Brew Your Own Magazine suggest in this recipe...

Making a 2 Gallon Mini MLT

Mine doesn't float at all...hmm... Maybe it has to do with the volume/weight of the grain bed. I use at least 3-4 lbs. of grain. I think that kept the SS braid down.

    Polish lager

I recently read that beer from the Polish region used Rose Hips as a preservative before hops were introduced! I was very excited to read that as I am Polish and also want to brew a unique Polish style beer. Maybe find a way to introduce this into the beer (end of boil, secondary fermentation)...

Have you heard this one before...

How is drinking Budweiser like having sex in a boat? ... ... ... ...it's f---ing close to water! You can insert any of your favorite "American Style Light Lager" beers into this joke.

    Unintentional Lagering...

I was unintentionally lagering an IPA I just made.... Basically, primary and secondary fermentation went off without a hitch at 65-68 degrees. I then moved the bottles to the basement for storage. I couldn't figure out why the beers had virtually no carbonation after 2 weeks. Then the...

    Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout

Just drank the SS Oatmeal Stout tonight. It definately had a nice, silky smooth mouth feel. Mine had a metallic taste, however. Maybe something to do with the time it took to get out here to Washington state. I actually thought the actual bottle was dark brown. I was shocked when I...

    First Label for First Brew

I also like your label. It has that 1890s sorta look. What type of font did you use? Something standard from MS Word? Will you be using the top portion with the brewery name on all your labels?

Making a 2 Gallon Mini MLT

Very interesting question, Cregar... I will have to defer to the experts on this one. I believe the_bird is correct in saying that leeching of zinc from galvanized parts is possible but you should be able to find items that are stainless steel or plastic. Now...I asked my LHBS owner about...

    Greetings from Minneapolis

Welcome pjbesinger: I just moved from away from Minneapolis (lived off of Hwy 35 and Portland Ave. S.). I definately miss the Cities. I've also gotta say, Midwest Supplies is WONDERFUL. You don't realize how nice you have it until you move away! I had no idea how "big" they were until I...

Making a 2 Gallon Mini MLT

Ok, Here is a parts list for a 2 gallon mini mash/lauter tun that I put together. I'm sure it would work for a 3 gallon cooler as well. The cooler was purchased from Target for $9.99. All the parts came from Home Depot and are the "Watts" brand. Use any equivalent in your area. All sizes...

Mini Mash System for Extract Brewers

Here are some photos of my 2 gallon MLT...sorry they are so large... RichBrewer, I was thinking about using a rubber stopper, racking cane and plastic flow valve (as you show in post #49) instead of the brass valve set up and saved another ~$10...but the brass valve looks REALLY cool!

Mini Mash System for Extract Brewers

I am the proud father of a 2 gallon, no ounce bouncing baby-blue colored mini-MLT!...although, he doesn't look a thing like me...?! I would post a picture but I can't figure out how to do it at the moment. Basically, I used the general principles described by RichBrewer in his several posts...

    Building a Sparge Arm?

...also, what is the piece/joint that actually allows the the arm to spin? Would it be possible to make an arm out of something other than copper pipe...maybe PVC?

Mini Mash System for Extract Brewers

Because we are talking about much smaller MLT vessels (2-3 gallons), a traditional sparge arm would probably not fit inside. Would it be possible to do a fly sparge with this Siphon Sprayer (see link below)? These are used to aerate cooler wort as it is being transferred from the kettle to the...

    How many have broken carboys....

I have also not broken a carboy but was warned by my new LHBS that it is dangerous since it puts a great deal of stress on the neck. The carriers were not made to handle full carboys. That being said, they obviously CAN be used for carrying purposes...I do it as well. I might get one of these...
