    Chilling wort by adding water?

Hmm, good point - I hadn't thought of what would happen if the cold water didn't cool the wort enough. I obviously would be adding the wort to the fermenter with 2-3 gallons of cold water in it. It would suck to be sitting there with five gallons of too-hot wort in the fermenter.... Next time...

    Chilling wort by adding water?

We live in London, and our tap water is pretty hard. So we ordered a home water cooler, and we absolutely love it. The water comes in 19-liter bottles, so they last a while, and the cooler has both a hot and cold spigot; hot water is 95-96* C and cold water at 6-8* C. Since the biggest pot I...

    recipe critique please!

Bumpity - someone care to take a stab at my last two questions (quoted below)? Two questions: To steep the grains, I got the temperature of the 2 gallons of water to about 170 F (76-77 C) before putting in the grain, thinking that the 1.76lb (800g) of grains would bring the temperature down...

    What is 'spraymalt'?

I had always just assumed that spraymalt was another word for 'dry malt extract', but today I saw an online shop that had 'spraymalt' listed separately from 'dry malt extract'. Is there a difference, or can I assume spraymalt = dry malt extract, and use in my recipes accordingly?

    recipe critique please!

Thanks guys for your replies. I had time yesterday to brew, so I went ahead with my recipe as stated - anyone want to take a guess as to what it will taste like? Two questions: To steep the grains, I got the temperature of the 2 gallons up to about 170 F (76-77 C) before putting in the grain...

    recipe critique please!

Ha! I'm from the US myself, but living in London. As you can imagine it causes all sorts of problems (as you can see by my going back and forth between gallons and grams etc...) Let's see: 0.88lb Caramalt 0.88lb Vienna malt Steep grains in 2 gallons of water for 1 hour, approx. 155 F...

    recipe critique please!

Oh oracle of all beer knowledge... Finally have time to brew a batch of devil water this weekend (young baby in the house definitely eats up the time...). I have some ingredients lying around since last autumn that I want to use before they get old. How does this recipe sound? No particular...

    How to use 1-gallon carboys?

ArcaneXor, do you siphon the liquid from the 1-gallon jugs into a bottling bucket specifically for bottling? I do have a couple of large buckets with spigots etc for use with bottling wands - I was worried that moving the liquid around that much wouldn't be good for it, but in hindsight - it...

    How to use 1-gallon carboys?

I picked up a couple of one-gallon glass carboys not too long ago. They look *fantastic* :rockin: However, after making a couple of micro-batches, I have some questions - things came out OK, but it wasn't as smooth as I would have liked: 1) Siphoning: any good hints on how to siphon? I...

    Recommend me a recipe

Another update here - just wondering, does that wort color look normal? It's a light brown color - like a coffee with loads of milk addeded. Sorry for the crappy photo quality; took it with my iPhone this morning...

Spent Grain? Make Your Best Friend Cookies!

FYI, I made some of these using the recipe at the start of the thread, they came out great, and Windsor loves 'em. They smelled good, so we decided to make some for the humans of the house to eat. Here's our test batch recipe: two cups spent grain (we had spent pilsner malt on hand) one cup...

Hmm, you're right, it is a bit high. I think the inside wall of the kitchen is a bit cooler; will (gently) move it in -

It's been about 18-20 hours; no airlock activity but that's probably just due to a slight CO2 leak from the stopper. I have a nice film forming on the top of the wort: ...but a pretty good pile of sludge at the bottom <g>

First batch made yesterday, very thick wort?!

Had the exact same thing happen to me last night: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/recommend-me-recipe-158686/. I ended up with molasses-type wort. In my case I had figured I'd lose a liter or two during the boil, but I had a much more aggressive boil-off. I was expecting 4L, but ended up...

    Recommend me a recipe

So I made this recipe last night, pretty much as my instructions above. 1) Get all ingredients out and ready to measure etc. before hand: 2) Partial mash of 1kg of pilsner malt. I didn't have any binder clips, but rubber bands worked pretty well. 3) Keep the mash tempature around...

OK, I'm going to be brewing two 1-gallon batches in a few hours - so you beermeisters out there have a few hours to save this n00b from any major TEH STUPID. Based on lots of reading (and thanks to DeathBrewer for his great partial mash writeup), here's my warplan 1) 2.5L of water, heat to...
