OG/FG and its bearing on primary fermentation

If you use a well sterilized thief, infection is not something you need worry about. It never hurts to be mindful of resterilizing your bung/airlock before replacing it either. A your yeast will also create a competitive environment for any other organism that may infect your brew. People have...

    Second Batch: Pumpkin Porter

I've learned so much in the past week, I thought I'd post a thank-you to everyone who helped out by answering a question or just helped me feel more confident. Every time I log in I learn something new. This is really a great community! Thanks!! Oh, here's a picture just a few hours after...

Oh Crap. What am I going to wind up with?

120 Lovibond on the crystal malt is still pretty intense. I wouldn't worry about it. RDWHAHB -- most important acronym I've learned on this board.

    Healthy Head?

More specifically, the sugar was in the form of maple syrup, and honestly, I don't know. It's just what the recipe called for! :) I found it in "Extreme Brewing", a book my roommate had, written by Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head Brewery. This book is laden with mistakes and terrible technical...

    Healthy Head?

I've assimilated a new acronym to my vocabulary: RDWHAHB. I added some more sugars for the yeast to munch on today (day 3). The air lock is bubbling about how it was early day 2. I plan on taking a sample as soon as I get access to a hydrometer. It'll be sitting for a while yet! I'm itching...

    Other hobbies besides brewing?

Photography, hockey, paintball, jiu jitsu, and most recently brewing. I'm not married to my SO yet, but she puts up with all of my hobbies very well. She watches my hockey games, sometimes comes to paintball tournaments, and this summer was active in our university jiu jitsu club. She's a killer...

I love McLain, beautiful park! KBC and the Library both have their beers that they do the best, but they're both quality -- good people too. I've already found that I've learned a lot, and I look forward to learning more. This is certainly not a passive hobby; there is always more to learn...

    Healthy Head?

My yeast is plugging away in here, but I've never seen a batch of wort with so much brown aggregate on the head. Does this look healthy? This is what it looked like before I went to bed: This morning: Must admit I'm a little worried, but I'm prepared to wait it out for a while.
