    Gateway Beer

Spotted Cow was the first beers that sparked my interest in craft beer.

    Experimental with First Few Brews

Going to play devil’s advocate again. Why can't throwing a bunch of stuff in your fermenter and seeing what you get at the end be an experiment? Sure it may be a poorly designed experiment that will probably not be replicable but it is still an experiment none the less. After all, that...

    Experimental with First Few Brews

I understand what your saying about getting the process down. However, a new brewer is much more capable of challenging the process than an experienced brewer who does everything the exact same way every time. Who is to say that there isn't a better process out there for brewing beer that we...

    Experimental with First Few Brews

I dont think that it is a "waste" of ingredients. They are more than likely just learning a new way not to brew beer. As Thomas Edison once said, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." These newbies are full of ideas and I say that we encourage them to run with them...

    Light Lagerish Recipe Suggestions?

I think that a blonde ale, cream ale or even a kolsch would work well for them.

    distilled water

Can you use your tap water? If your own water tastes good to drink then it will produce good beer. there is no need to purchase bottled water from a store.

    Kegerator lost power :(

Have you tried drinking it? I think that this would be the easiest way to see if the beer has gone bad or if there are any off flavors. Ultimately, I think that you will more than likely be fine but the only way to tell would be to pour yourself a glass.

    Water amount question

As a general rule I would recommend boiling the 6 gallons down to 5 gallons versus adding the 1 additional gallon of water. This is because you will achieve better hop utilization and a slightly better tasting beer. Either way I am sure that you will still have some kick ass beer. Also, there...

Sorry. Now I am going to sulk because I feel bad for bashing you.

    Advice on kit/yeast

You can put it in the fridge if you are concerned about it but it should last for a couple months just hanging out in your pantry. Also, I wouldnt be too worried about the change in flavor from having to pitch more yeast into a stuck fermentation. From what I have read, most of the flavors from...

Homebrew can save you lots of money

I am with Bobby on this one. I think that people would be naive to ignore the opportunity cost of time spent brewing. Everything has an opportunity cost even our leisure time. I don't mean to bash anyone but it appears that Bobby is the only person on this thread who understands basic economics.

    Advice on kit/yeast

Personally, I would get the liquid yeast from your local homebrew supply store (I perfer Wyeast Activator packs for ease of use). Additionally, I would recommend getting the dry yeast that comes with the kit as well. The dry yeast will last for a considerable amount of time and this way you have...

Alaskan Amber - Same brew, two yeast strains and two different color beers

Although this seems like the best answer to me I am just curious as to why would their be a different density of wort if everything was at a rolling boil for 90 minutes and then went straight through the plate chiller and into the carboys for fermentation in less than 15 minutes. To me it seems...

Alaskan Amber - Same brew, two yeast strains and two different color beers

I just brewed an 10 gallon all-grain batch of Alaskan Amber from the BYO magazine. The recipe calls for the use of Wyeast German Ale. However, I decided to use Wyeast American Ale in one of the carboy and Wyeast German Ale in the other so that I could see how they each impact the beer. I am 10...

Using the Hot Liqour Tank as a Brew Kettle?

Need some advice here, I am stepping up to all grain brewing shortly and I would like to do 10 gallon batches of both high and low gravity beers. I am thinking about purchasing the 15 gallon all grain commercial kit from Midwest Supplies. I would then use the hot liqour tank as my brew kettle...

    Hop Storage in Beer Kits

If it is better to store your hops in the freezer how come when you purchase beer kits from a local home brew shop they just let the hops sit in the beer kit box at room temperature? Do they do something different with the packaging that allows them to store the hops at room temperature so the...

Using Coca-Cola to increase the amount of fermentable sugar?

Nevermind. I found in the threads that this is probably a horrible Idea. Sorry for wasting everyones time.
