    12oz vs 22oz bottles

I have not noticed a taste difference between the 12 and 22 ouncers. That said, I went and bought some 25 oz. mugs at the dollar store so I can consume my 22 oz beers with one pour.

    First BJCP Results Help

I have to say you have some testicular fortitude to post your score sheets like that. My hats off to you sir. It's obvious you are dedicated to making better beer. With that said, this last year I bit the bullet and built the fementation chamber and, without a doubt, it has made the biggest...

What is the WORST beer you have ever had?

The worst beer I've ever had the displeasure of laying lip to was Original Schlenkerla Smokebeer (from Germany). Ever couple of weeks I go to Total Wine because they have an awesome selection of microbrews. I always grab a bunch I have never heard of just to expand my knowledge/pallet. I find...

A half joking but half serious question

Actually that is something that I really like about this site...the old timers still come back to the beginner forum to help out. In addition, I've been brewing for awhile and I know I still have alot to learn so I still feel like a beginner in alot of ways. I think you'll know if you're...

    Leaving kettle trub behind...

I just used a paint strainer this week for the first time. I bought the 5 gallon ones from Lowes for about $3 for a two pack. After soaking one in Starsan I put it in my fermenter like a trashbag (it has an elastic top) and racked the wort into the strainer/fermenter. It clogged up but still...

American IPA Bell's Two Hearted Ale Clone (close as they come)

Just brewed this recipe today. My original gravity ended up being 1.060. I also used WLP001. We'll see how it goes. I do have 2 oz. of Centennial leaf to dry hop with. Looks great. Smells even better.

    Fermenting in South Florida?

I live in the Homestead/Miami area. As RM-MN said, the temp controlled freezer/fridge is your best option. I finally broke down and got one this year and it has made a bigger improvement to my beer than anything else I've purchased or changed. If you have the means, I highly recommend it.

    Dogfish 120 Minute Imperial IPA

A local store here had some but would only sell one bottle per person. I bought a bottle and thankfully watched Sam's video on it. The wife and I shared the bottle after letting it warm for a bit, about 50 degrees. It is very much like a liquor. I enjoyed it but I certainly wasn't my...

    Ruthless Rye

Picked up a 12 pack a few days ago. Very good beer. Well balanced. The only other Rye beer I've had was from a brewery in Asheville NC called French Broad. It was called Rye Hopper. It was also very good. So good I left with growler to take back to Florida.

Looking to purchase a brewing kettle...suggestions?

I'm very happy with my 42 quart polarware with temp gauge and spigot. A little more expensive than some but the quality is there.

    Cold strike, ramping mash

I asked almost the same question in the all grain section a few weeks back but never really got a definative answer. I have a 42 quart polarware SS brew pot that I use as my MLT. I have direct heat (propane) going to the bottom. Because of the false bottom and regular stirring I have never...

    Single Hop APAs/IPAs

As a relatively new brewer sometimes I do single hop beers simply to really get to know a type of hop...it's bittering characteristics, flavor, aroma etc.

How long for fermentation to start.

Take a look at the sticky thread at the top of this page "Fermentation can take 24 to 72 hrs to show visible signs". Lots of good information.

What Brew Lessons Did You Learn From Your First Batch?

What I learned...read everything you can get your hands on. Oh yeah, the "search" function on this website is invaluable when you have questions.

    Freezer as fermentation chamber

I recently got a GE 7 cu. ft. chest freezer and a digital Ranco temp. controller. Great little set up. I made a stand (2X4's and some casters) so I can roll it around to where I need it. I wanted to be able to fit 2 carboys/buckets in there at the same time. I went to the store and measured...

Any must have local beers in Asheville, NC.

I love Pisgah, Highland and French Broad. Pisgah is actually on Black Mountain, a few exits east of A-ville. Nice place to hang out and enjoy some very good organic brews. There are so many local breweries that are popping up there. There must be 8 to 10 within a 20 mile radius of...
