Can't get mash efficiency above 65%

Thanks for all the replies. Re: channeling I thought that with my cooler shape being reasonably tall (12.5"L x 9"W x 9"D), my lautering pipes providing decent coverage and with a slow sparge that I wouldn't suffer much from channeling. I always do a good stir before sparging (although I haven't...

Can't get mash efficiency above 65%

I've been gradually modifying my AG cooler mash tun system to try to get more accurate but my mash efficiency always seems to be stuck in the low to mid 60's. I'm not shooting for anything beyond 80% but 75% would be nice and I can't see why I can't achieve that based on what others have said...

Container to sit 30qt brewpot in to cool

A couple of wood blocks in the base will probably be needed which also means I need to add the ice after the pot is sat on the blocks. Unless I can find some metal (non-buoyant) blocks to set the pot on.

Container to sit 30qt brewpot in to cool

Great idea hamiltont. In fact I think we have one in the garage we used as a planter lol - duh. Let's hope it's wide enough.

Container to sit 30qt brewpot in to cool

I have a fermentation chiller (double coil so one end sits in ice bath) which works pretty well but I'm on the lookout for any bright ideas for a cheap container I could sit the brewpot in and create an external ice bath to help the cooling process along faster. I think my brewpot is ~15"...

Overfilled 5G Carboy & then got it a little chilly

Wife called, Krausen was bubbling through airlock so I had her stick the 3/8" tube in the stopper as a temp measure. Off to get some 1" tubing now. I think this'll be a big foamer for sure.

Overfilled 5G Carboy & then got it a little chilly

Or should I buy some 1" tubing to fit directly into the carboy neck?

Overfilled 5G Carboy & then got it a little chilly

I aerated pretty good by pouring the wort into the carboy through a funnel. I did do a yeast starter but only yesterday morning so it wasn't exactly going crazy when I pitched about 8 hrs later. Just checked with the wife and there's some activity starting to go on but no bubbling in the airlock...

Overfilled 5G Carboy & then got it a little chilly

Yeah I didn't even realize it was a 5 gal carboy till I had it filled. My amazon wish list has a 6G Better Bottle on it :-)

Overfilled 5G Carboy & then got it a little chilly

Thanks bbognerks, that would have been my guess. I was just worried the low surface area would affect the yeast doing its job somehow.

Overfilled 5G Carboy & then got it a little chilly

I'm still relatively new to AG and yesterday I brewed a batch of 80 shilling Scottish Ale. I used to just ferment at room temp in a plastic bucket but I wanted to improve my quality so I built an Igloo Ice Box cooler to improve the temp control of the ferment some. I built it to hold the glass...

Fermentation control, Igloo ice Cube - which one?

So I created a cooler setup just like Yooper's, filled it and a 5 gallon glass carboy with water at about 64 deg. I dumped in 4 frozen bicycle water bottles and monitored the temp inside the carboy every few hours. Air temp was consistently 70-73 deg. The carboy temp dropped from 64 to 57 deg in...

Academy Sports & Outdoors. I see from their store map the closest one to Tampa is Jacksonville :0-(

Fermentation control, Igloo ice Cube - which one?

Ok well thanks for letting me know. I picked up the cooler today and will hopefully work on a lid this weekend. I'll probably do some tests with a water-filled carboy first since I don't think I'll have time to brew for a couple of weeks.

Fermentation control, Igloo ice Cube - which one?

Yooper, I know this is an older thread but I'm thinking of building an Igloo Ice Cube cooler fermentation chiller like yours and I have a question. With your system I'm curious what the temp profile would look like if you never added more ice. Ie: how warm would it get after 24hr? Depends...
