    Home brewing in Japan

Did a trip to Costco and picked up some Numans Own 100% Concord grape juice. It was 2 bottles X 2.84 Liters for 968 yen, so about 170 yen per liter. I am sure if I do a search I will find wine recipes using this stuff. Another trip to "Green Farm" where I picked up a small blackberry...

    Japan Hops Trading -

So Challenger and Fuggle are easy to buy here! Great find! I have heard a friend of friend have grown sorachi ace on contract for sapporo, somewhere up north. It would be nice to have the one Japanese hop variety in my garden, it has a high yield apparently. *Edit - friend of friend not...

    Japan Hops Trading -

Yeah, I had previously arranged with him for a cutting at the end of the season and then things changed for him and he moved to America so he had to get rid of them anyway. I promised to pass on my good fortune and help other homebrewers out with some rhizomes. BTW I am doing some seed...

    Japan Hops Trading -

Yes I already have 2 rootstocks that were given to me in October by a generous homebrewer leaving the country. I intend to share them when winter dormancy is ending. I have magnum and centennial as far as I know. I have a 3rd plant that is unknown and in seriously unstable health after...

    Japan Hops Trading -

Woops, I meant to write that I was curious as to when is the best time for cutting the hops rhizome here. So I guess late February should be fine I think the worst of winter is over already. Most farms wouldn't need a root hormone unless they have an orchard or vineyard or other plants that...

    Japan Hops Trading -

I got some root hormone yesterday, everything is still dormant but my ume tree is starting to grow flower buds. Has anyone done cuttings in Japan before? I would like to know when is the best time to do so, I can follow American guidelines but I don't really know what growing zone we would...

    Home brewing in Japan

Ok, I changed the spreadsheet to list what country the resource is shipping from, and added a few that I had missed. I think most of us are trying to show the local brew-suppliers some love as they are helping to legitimize the hobby here. They do not carry every thing that we could wish for...

Oh, I wanted to mention; my brother got me a premium membership so I can now go back and edit the original posts I made. I will try to find time to update some of the information in there so new readers don't have to skim through all 25 (and growing) pages for a quick-start guide to home...

    Home brewing in Japan

I have used the short tube "suck start" and the gravity method, but still miss my auto siphon that I left back in Canada; that was a cheap luxury! I think the main trouble with the 100 yen siphon is the risk of not fully sanitizing it, so I doubt if I will use that on the upstream side...

    Home brewing in Japan

Chrome crashed when I tried posting earlier sorry if this is a duplicate... Got a couple of things at Daiso today, 105 Yen each; Citric acid 200gm Sodium Bicarb 200gm (both were beside the bleach and household chemicals but their ingredients say 99.9% so I'm hoping they are fine) - There...

    Home brewing in Japan

Hope you all had a good new years! We walked out to Nojima island (3 bridges connect it) and watched the fireworks. After, visited the temple/shrine there where they had a mikoshi, bonfire, free sake and amazake, oshizuko with mochi, and yakitori. Hung out and chatted with the old Ojisans...

I will def hit up Costco near Sugita again. I am lucky my employer makes a weekly trip there so I can just tag along when we get supplies for the cafe. The frozen berries are great there for the price, I never noticed the apple juice there before I will check it out next time! I like the...

    Beersmith and 2 computers

I just want to clarify one last bit and I then I will start fresh with another google drive attempt (I have a DBox account but I'd like to know if this works with other types of personal file clouds). In your step 3 you are making a copy of the Beersmith .exe into dropbox? So in step 4/5...

Looking for input, Japanese "Momiji Ale"

I think if you can get the color and everything else down, you could simply take some of the base malt and smoke it with the type of wood you want. I did that with sakura chips this fall and got a smoked porter on the go. I don't have a smoker so I put foil packs of chips on my shichirin bbq...

    Home brewing in Japan

SanktGallen really loves to make fruit beers huh? Orange, Pineapple, and Apple. Does anyone have any tips on buying fruit cheap in Japan? I wouldn't mind making a country wine or fruit beer if the price is right! Grapes are crazy expensive when I see them at the super, as are berries...
